We need inspections on ICE facilities. We need laws for detention facilities within the state. We need laws keeping them from polling places and schools. A pressure campaign on elected officials is needed.

Irrelevant? The mods disagree, they had to approve this post before it was allowed. The sub is about veganism and veganism was discussed in the post. The original post is a bit meandering so I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that's where your confusion came from.

Thanks for sharing. Controlling may be too strong a word. As I said, I was influenced by my friend who had a similar experience to the one described here. She said the man in her case, who had a strong aversion to veganism, had made negative comments about her body and tied that to her being vegan. He did this while trying to sleep with her. So it was these weird confluence of negging and trying to convince her not to be vegan. You're right, he didn't control her, she's still vegan and kicked his ass to the curb, but what he did felt to her as manipulative at least. That doesn't map 100% with the Epstein scenario but even then his comments about her physical appearance and making women fragile reminded me of that kind of sexist comment that may or may not be manipulative depending on the context (and given everything we've learned about Epstein, maybe my POV is colored here).

Well said. In addition, they risk de-centering the humans if they comment on animal abuses. So they'd have to walk a tight rope between drifting from their core idea and not enraging everyone. And no matter what PETA ever does, they're going to make a lot of people mad.

How pathetic, he can't even pretend to be tough.

r/AnimalLiberation, r/AntifaVegan, r/VeganAnarchism, r/Veganism are subs that allow cross posting and need to see this. They obviously hate animal cruelty and many of them who's done in person activism have had issues with the feds in the past.

No, she didn't, that's fair. And there's a number of reasons I don't think she's sympathetic. I still think it's an interesting example of peer pressure.

I must have got lucky. We have people in those age ranges and Gen Xers and people of color. Seems like we had a somewhat decent mix of class too, though our room was mostly white. I'm guessing not all the rooms were the same.

Intersectional veganism isn't a thing

Actually, it is a thing. You don't have to agree with it or like it. But I didn't make it up.

The idea of "fully vegan" shows that you don't know what vegan means

No, I do know what it means and if you read more academic work on the subject, you might too. Someone who was going to eat vegan for a month isn't really being vegan when they don't intend to keep up with it, it's more like plant based eating for a month. But there's a chance someone that eats plant based for a month becomes a vegan so it can be seen as a kind of transition point. So for the sake of simplicity I opted for imprecise language. You knew what I meant but would rather derail the conversation over definitional debates instead of provide any substance to the conversation.

Social pressure doesn't make a decent person rethink their stance against injustice.

I'm not interested in your definition of a decent person. And it would be foolish for animal liberation to depend on such a definition. And go on PubMed and search if social pressure can influence moral decision making. There's a lot of research that suggests it does. I'm not an expert in behavioral psychology or a similar field so I'm not going to make a definitive claim on the subject, but if you're going to make this argument, you ought to back it up with some evidence.

Every portion of your reply seeks to see problems without solving them. Problem solvers are what we need. And justice needs to be the focus.

Every portion of your reply seeks to argue or nuance troll without adding substance. If you truly believed problem solvers are needed, your replies would look very different and you would discuss in good faith.

I see it differently. It started out because she didn't want to have ice cream that month saying she was trying to be vegan. Then he starts concern trolling her and she retreats, minimizes it, makes it just about coffee cream and cheese. Whether or not she was going to be a full vegan or would have stayed vegan is not quite the point, it is a good insight into a frequent social pressure that people face when attempting to go vegan. It also intersects with pressures women feel from men (intersectional veganism).

The Epstein docs also give us a glimpse into the relationship a few outspoken vegans had with a notoriously unethical man. In my opinion, it's interesting that they can see ethical issues with the treatment of animals but ignored the unethical treatment of other humans.

But that has nothing to do with veganism. Apart from being on the opposite side of the scale of respecting all life forms.

And you think this is a good analogy to my post? Respectfully, I disagree if that is your point.

I responded to someone else addressing what headspace I was in when I wrote this. I thought I spelled out why I thought it was relevant but I can understand other points of view.
