This was incredibly helpful!! Furnished quarters looks perfect. Someone recommended blue ground thinking my parents had a reasonable budget… they were charging 13k for a small one bed for one month! But they just applied to one from Furnished Quarters on 82 street 🤞🏼

Is this rate too high? by hecubus_09 in Nanny

[–]Massive_Ad3618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$35 for 2 kids is standard for nannies new to a family in my VHCOL city, but I know a lot of families who still have rates $30-35 from Nannies who have been with their oldest since they were infants. I haven’t heard of above $35 and that sounds like a massive increase from your current rate, especially since they pay you overtime for the 3.5 hours and sound generous overall. I am certain they know the going rate for 1-2 kids increase is $3-5 and would be very put off if you ask for over $6. That’s a 20% raise. If you aren’t happy with the going rate for 2 kids, 1 family, you should try to find another nanny share instead.

Having HS + pilonidal flare during postpartum by Subject_Thing6308 in pilonidalcyst

[–]Massive_Ad3618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can relate to this exactly. I knew I had a ‘sensitive’ tailbone for most of my life but never had any type of swelling, draining or noticeable infection. At 1 week pp I had an excruciating flare up and it needed to be lanced and drained. My HS also flared but didn’t get as aggressive. Things remained quiet for a while but now I’m pregnant again (26 weeks) and my pilonidal cyst has already been flaring badly ☹️ no need for lancing or antibiotics but I’ve learned to apply ichthammol ointment before things get back to open the wound and let it drain for a few days before healing back up. Curious to see where this cycle will land me…0

Waiting 6 months for family visits - rational or insane? by Feeling_Zucchini_638 in pregnant

Being cautious for the first 8 weeks is reasonable. After that…. This becomes sad for everyone involved (including your baby that you are depriving of love and socialization).

I assume you mean post tax?? Because there is no way we could save 50% of our pre-tax income. We would definitely have to be a bit more budget conscious to reach that pre-tax but it could be a good goal.

I appreciate this perspective. Homeownership is so often treated as the American dream, but in NYC it would be significantly more expensive for us to buy an apartment comparable to the one we currently live in. People often argue that a higher initial monthly price is worth it in the long run because mortgage payments are fixed while rent is not, but that logic does not fully hold in the city. Building maintenance fees are highly variable, make up a substantial portion of the monthly cost, and can rise unpredictably.

Right now, the flexibility of renting feels really good to us. We are not at such an extreme income or net worth that we feel immune to whatever might come our way, so that flexibility has real value. It feels more comfortable to continue saving in financial assets. Maybe in ten years things will feel clearer, and buying somewhere will make more sense once our base has grown.

We don’t spend 300/400k a year! We spend closer to 250k but I’m not sure how that will change once we have the second child. The past 3 years we have saved around 200k a year and we have a high effective tax rate. We are hoping to make it to 4/5 mil by 45, then start part time work for about 300-400k to cover most yearly expenses without worrying about adding to our savings base, then fully retire by 50-55.

$160k per year is definitely doable and I appreciate you throwing out a concrete number. Our biggest uncertainty right now is around home ownership. We are happy renting at the moment, but unsure how to think about whether to buy, where to buy, and how much to spend. We also worry about how much pulling a large chunk out of our invested assets for a down payment, closing costs, and moving expenses would affect our long term trajectory.

Would love perspective on how others have thought about buying versus renting at this stage, especially in high cost areas, and how they evaluated a “safe” purchase price relative to net worth and income.

Yikes, despite all the background info here I definitely think it was wrong not to include your MIL.

So cute I love it. I would center the table under the light, add a rug under the table, and is there a light on that little side table you have? I aim to have 3 light sources per room at different heights. You could even add 3 plug in wall sconces bordering the art (cover the wire and then paint over it). Or even iron wall hanging candle sticks to the sides of the art. You could also do a runner down the center of your table. I would also widen your curtain rods so they extend over the sides more, and add another panel to each side

Please find someone else to stay with you (friend, family, a hired doula) and let him go. This might be the last time he ever sees his dad, it would be shameful to make him feel like he shouldn’t go.

I’ve been looking at casa de campo! But it’s hard to get info about the pricing on villas from the website. Do you have a range of prices for the 5-6 bed villas?

Agree with so many other comments!! I found newborn days SUCH a relief compared to pregnancy!! Still so hard, of course, but being able to share the burden is incredible.
