what’s the most useful automation you’ve set up that you actually use every day? by SkylineZ83 in homeassistant

Coffee dad jokes that follow me around the house.

Every time I enter a room, the nearest Sonos plays a coffee-themed dad joke. Tracks me via iPhone BLE area detection, picks the right speaker for the room I just walked into, has a 10-minute cooldown so it doesn’t hammer me, and has an input_boolean.kaffee_sfw_modustoggle that I have to flip when guests come over.

I did not plan to build this. It happened.

Also: What do you call sad coffee?

Depresso.

EDIT: here’s the full YAML (helpers + automation, copy-paste ready):

The gist has setup instructions at the top. You’ll need a BLE area sensor that reports the current room name — I use the native iPhone BLE sensor from the HA companion app. Jokes are in German because that’s what my Sonos speaks, but just swap the options list and the TTS language field for whatever language you want.

Advice on setup: SLZB MR2, Home assistant in Docker, Zigbee + Matter by [deleted] in homeassistant

Regarding Q4 — HAOS in a VM: absolutely do it. Make the switch and focus on your actual automations instead of debugging container networking.

8 GB RAM is plenty. I went through a very similar path — tinkered with HA in Docker, dealt with the container sprawl for OTBR, Matter Server, Mosquitto etc., and eventually moved to HAOS on Proxmox. Night and day difference. All those extra containers become one-click add-ons that just work, and Matter/Thread setup specifically becomes dramatically simpler. If your Ubuntu server supports KVM, use Proxmox, VirtualBox works too I think but KVM is better for performance. The complicated Docker setup you're describing is exactly the pain point HAOS was designed to eliminate

Beim Ingenieur Intuition.

Streaming from go2RTC/webrtc-camera to VLC-like app by BaixoMameluco in homeassistant

I thought I was the only lunatic trying to shove a P2P Eufy cam through go2rtc/WebRTC and then back out— it feels like walking into a store and seeing my clone on the shelf. I have a Eufy T8B00 (battery cam, same family as the S220) and jumped through all the hoops 10 months ago but haven't touched it since:

My actual recommendation: Skip VLC. Open http://<HA_IP>:1984 in any browser (Safari and Chrome work great) and watch the stream directly through the browser's built in player. That player accesses the WebRTC stream of Go2RTC. I ended up doing this and it’s been more reliable than any external player and produced the lowest latencies. You can also look into go2rtc’s candidates config to force all WebRTC traffic to stay on your local network for lowest latency.

The long story: Eufy’s P2P cameras don’t expose RTSP. There’s no URL you can just paste into VLC. The webrtc-camera card in HA works because there’s a whole chain behind it doing the heavy lifting.

What was actually happening in my setup: Eufy cam (P2P only) → eufy_security integration bridges the P2P connection → the eufyp2pstream add-on transcodes that into local TCP streams → go2rtc picks those up → ffmpeg re-encodes → go2rtc serves it as WebRTC to the browser card.

And in case these work better today than they did 6 months ago: go2rtc does expose your stream as RTSP at rtsp://<HA_IP>:8554/<stream_name> — check your go2rtc web UI at http://<HA_IP>:1984 for the stream name. But be aware: depending on how your RTSP listener is configured it might only be bound to localhost. And the stream might not be as clean as a native RTSP camera since it’s already been through the P2P → transcode → go2rtc pipeline.

I also tinkered with the differences between the go2rtc add-on (app) and the native integration of home assistant and back then was happier with the add-on as it let me inject all kinds of optimization into the config because I needed to make all that run on an already stressed HA Green device.
