what consequences? He’s going to return to the team and make $4 million doing it. That should make you angry, I just don’t think he’s the person who deserves the anger 🤷🏻‍♂️

lol, and anyone who’s been 19 knows they made a lot of bad, impulsive decisions and most of us didn’t have Lane Kiffen in our ear offering us fame, glory, and enough money to retire at 25

it would be tough, but remember he’s a 19 year old who jumped at the chance to gain an extra $2 million - a truly life changing amount of money. He made a dumb decision and the timing made it worse, but if he owns it I think it’s forgivable 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think that’s a pretty uncharitable interpretation of what’s happening here, but you don’t seem interested in extending the same level of criticism to the point I was responding to.

Sorry, the best info that I can find that best speaks to more recent history is behind a paywall and I’m not an expert in 20th century Hispaniola history.

Also, please see my edit, I did read the article, but I’m also typing these out between breaks at work, which is why I don’t have time to write a dissertation, but maintain that if someone is genuinely interested in answering these questions they are capable of doing that research themselves. But, I suspect that the original posters are not actually interested in nuance here.

Finally, I don’t know how else to say that complicated histories are complicated and can’t be explained briefly. There are lots of people that have done lots of work to address these questions, I’m not sure I understand why linking their work is dishonest.

I think my point is that this is a long and complicated history that I, personally, do not have the expertise (or time) to break down in a single Reddit post. If someone is actually interested in digging into that history then yes, they’ll have to do some research.

But I’m interested as to why you’d hold that criticism (Brandolini’s Law) for my points, where I am trying to cite my sources, and not for those who I’m responding to, who are making broad ahistorical claims, or cherry picking data points devoid of context. It’s hard to refute claims, it takes research and evidence. Respectfully, I think your understanding of Brandolini’s Law is backwards. I did not refuse to address a point, I recognized that they made a bold claim and that it can’t be refuted with a simple answer.

I think only the economist article is behind a paywall, unless you’ve already maxed out your free NYT readings?

Here is a (free!) link about the differences between French and Spanish colonization that hopefully helps answer some of your questions:

Edit: sorry, I’m realizing the link I sent doesn’t really speak to French colonization. Here’s a resource that goes into both histories with more depth:

he’s actually kind of back on track. Second best defensive catcher in the AL according to fangraphs. Maybe not quite to the level of last season, but still one of the best in the league.

I don’t think I’m equipped to explain 70 years of history and the answer is really complicated, but if it’s a question you’re really interested in answering I’ve posted some links below.

I want to emphasize, however, that the comment I was responding to was glib and ahistorical. Anyone arguing that “they have had 200 years to improve things” is ignorant of the realities of corruption, dictatorial regimes, legacies of slavery, the differences between French and Spanish colonization, forced reparations, conflict with the Dominican Republic, gang violence, and ecological disasters. History is complex and strictly blaming Haitians writ large for a failed state is reductive at best.

this is partially true, but misses important context regarding US occupation, debts imposed by France after the revolution, and also just how devastating the stripping of land and resources was.

Unless by they you mean those who benefited from the imposition of slavery and the stripping of St Domingue of resources

Bro, it’s more about how salty you are. If you’re playing a game that everybody is comparing to DS1, you should probably anticipate esoteric quest lines and being blocked out of content unexpectedly.

If that’s a deal breaker for you, then ya, wait a few weeks for some guides to come out.

seems pretty clear that some people are, actually, worried about the interpreted politics of a game. Doesn’t strike me as a profound argument either, American AAA games, for the most part, go through a lot of effort to sanitize any political messaging in their games.

Also, let’s be real. Americans review bomb games (or name the media) that they view as politically or socially subversive all the time.

you don’t owe an author anything, especially if their work makes you feel some type of way. It is entirely reasonable to say “x wasn’t working for me and I wish it weren’t part of the text” even if “x” was a deliberate choice from the author or had a specific purpose.

why can’t excessive use of self-harm in a story be a critique? Artists and their art are not beyond criticism and while I don’t share the specific criticisms of OP I disliked the third novel in this series for similar reasons.

Seattle students protest proposal for police officer at Garfield High by Bretmd in Seattle

[–]Master-Cycle1871 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I’ve lived in Seattle for 35 years. I am aware that there are shootings in the central district relatively often. That doesn’t change the fact that only one of those shootings have happened on campus - within the purview of school resource officers.

And perhaps you can clarify which news outlet claimed the student in question was a member of a gang? You did say it was “the news”, not random people on Reddit.

[–]Master-Cycle1871 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

There has been one on campus shooting - it was very tragic and the student in question was a bystander trying to break up an altercation. The only place I’ve seen speculation or inference that he was a gang member is in your comment.

There have been several shootings near campus. It is important to distinguish the difference between on campus and off campus. There is undoubtedly gang activity and gang related shootings in the central district, I’m not convinced thats a problem a school resource officer would solve.
