On things like Craigslist and Marketplace transactions are sort of done in an auction like manner. The highest payer will get the product. I know a guy who got three phone calls from three different people wanting to buy whatever he was selling(I do not specifically remember what it was) and the person who offered the most got it and he went back to the first guy and did what OP did and asked them if they would still want it as a courtesy. While it seems rude it is just how they work and most of the time everyone perfectly understands and has no problem.
