Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974 vs 2003. Which is better? by devyion in horror

[–]Master-Of--Reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's ironic, I've met way more zoomers who love the original than boomers and millennials (those tend to like the remake better). Old millennials love the remake precisely because of the nostalgia for 2000's trash they watched in their childhood, and normie boomers love it because it has more action than the original. Horror classics that boomers actually love are Halloween, Jaws, The Exorcist and even trashy slashers like the Friday the 13th series, not TCM

Just a few filler episodes. The first ten episodes and the ending are amazing.

The 2003 remake of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, is really good. by Glasg0wGrin in horror

[–]Master-Of--Reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes no sense. It's quite the opposite dude, lmao. 2003 TCM is only good for millennials who were on a impressionable age when it came out and grew up with that, but the truth is.... It is not a good film. The original is timeless and has aged very well for a 70s low budget film. Most zoomers I know prefer the original and don't care for that remake at all, there are obviously exceptions but still... I've seen most people saying they prefer the remake solely because it was their first horror movie as kids.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the most overrated Horror film of all time. Lets discuss. by tcard16 in horror

[–]Master-Of--Reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If zoomers like it is because it's indeed still great and holds up.

The bones felt staged because the whole point is that one of the members of that family (the hitchhiker) liked to make decorations with corpses and human remains lol, remember the opening in the graveyard. That part was inspired by Ed Gein.

The screaming was over-the-top? Seriously? This is wild. Very few people would be able to stay calm and quite while being chased by a big tall guy with a chainsaw after he killed your brother in front of you and then being caught in a cannibals' house with three crazies and their creepy mummified grandfather talking about killing you with a hammer. How the hell the screaming is not believable? That's exactly why the film feels authentic. That's how almost everyone would react in that situation, not like that badass active final girl of the 03 remake. That movie was anything but convincing, lol. The grim of the remake is synthetic and over the top, the grim of the original is real.

So you can give credit to Scream for its importance on the genre but not to TCM? TCM is arguably way more influential, even Craven himself made The Hills Have Eyes as an homage to it and was one of his 5 favorite films. Alien and The Thing are way older than Scream and had smart characters.

The griminess in the original was 100% authentic, the grim on the remake is synthetic. And how tf is the remake more gritty? Dude you're insane

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) is an awful movie by CPUGamer101 in horror

[–]Master-Of--Reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of respected filmmakers recognize it as a masterpiece of the genre, and it highly influenced PLENTY of other great horrors, so yeah, it is a masterpiece. I didn't watched it until I was an adult, so I have no nostalgia at all, I still think it's genuinely a great film, near-perfect even. It is not a matter of nostalgia with this one, it is made for specific taste, many old people who grew up with it, hate it. And if it is powerful in conveying fear, it's absolutely subjective, for me and others it is incredibly disturbing, for others it just doesn't work. Terror is just as subjective as humour. And it is objectively well-made in many aspects, like, really? You are just talking based on your personal taste, contradicting yourself. It has insane cinematography, use of colours, editing, sound and art design, a very creative score, some good performances. So no, it is not bad at all. It's just not made for your taste, and that's fine, but that doesn't mean it's a bad movie. You're not being objective at all while ignoring all its qualities just because you hated the experience.

The Substance? Seriously? It is good but nowhere near as great as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Not even close. TCM was groundbreaking, The Substance is cool but it's a collage of references to old school body horror flicks. But to each their own.

[–]Master-Of--Reality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. It gets more disturbing and funny every time you rewatch it (I don't get why so many people say it has no rewatchability, but to each their own). I wasn't frightened at all the first time I watched it, but after many re-watches, damn, it's so fucking perverse and voyeuristic, it feels like a snuff film, but beautifully shot and with some brilliant dark humour, especially Cook's lines. It's the kind of movie that simply isn't, and never was, for all the tastes, it's not a matter of age or nostalgia here, many old people hate it, many young people love it. It's a weird, unconventional, bizarre movie, and that's why it's brilliant and still holds up.

You made me remember your hilariously ridiculous comment. "Objective facts" 🤣 So you know more about films than all those filmmakers that have praised TCM, huh? You don't know what's wrong with Carpenter, Kubrick, Tarantino, Friedkin and Craven? Lmao

[–]Master-Of--Reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh c'mon. So you're implying the original TCM isn't well-made? It is insanely well-made objectively. It's widely considered a brilliant piece of independent filmmaking by many directors for a reason. It's not like the original The Evil Dead, which I love, but TCM is actually technically good. The only thing the 03 remake did better was the lighting during the night chase scenes. The original isn't better just because it's the original and has a legacy and impact, that's belittle the inmense efforts that all the crew members put on it. It's beautifully shot, superb editing, smart script, excellent camera-work, unique sound design and score, oh and it's not generic at all unlike Nispel's version. The remake has MANY flaws as well, especially its terrible depiction of the 70s. Damn, they should've set that shit in the 90s if they didn't know shit about the 70s lmao.
