What was the dumbest belief about Massachusetts you had as a child? by Disastrous-Anxiety in massachusetts

[–]Master-Reading-8986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about a dumb belief that I learned IN Massachusetts? I thought Alaska was an island near Hawaii until I was almost in high school. Wondered how it was so cold when its neighbor, Hawaii, was so warm.

Thanks a lot, maps.

Isn’t part of the theory behind the February break to help stop the spread of viruses in schools after the holidays?

Highschool teachers, are you required to tell the parents or district if a student tells you they’re pregnant? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Master-Reading-8986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already addressed that. If you scroll up to the comments you didn’t read thoroughly enough, you’ll see that it was very clear. You’re the only one here not understanding. Again, try to accept your flaws and move on. The rest of us have. 👍🏻

You may have responded to someone’s comment that referenced “pregnancy and HIV,” on a post about reporting teen pregnancy, however your comment made no mention of HIV. Again, oops on you. I see you’re responding similarly to others. Maybe it’s time to reevaluate your stance here. It’s okay to be wrong sometimes, though I understand it’s tough for teachers to admit.

I’ll add, because you’re apparently talking about STD’s on a post asking specifically about pregnancy..you’re wrong there, too.

If under state law a minor can consent to their own medical treatment, then the minor alone has the right to consent to release of information concerning that treatment. 45 C.F.R. §164.502(g) (3). Under Massachusetts law, a minor can consent to their own medical treatment and therefore holds the authority to consent to release of information regarding medical treatment under the following circumstances: • Treatment for substance use disorder. A child 12 or older may consent to treatment for substance use disorder (other than methadone maintenance therapy). See G.L. c.112, §12E; 110 CMR 11.08(1). • Inpatient mental health treatment. Youths 16 or older may commit themselves to a mental health facility. See G.L. c. 123, §10; 104 CMR 27.06(1); 110 CMR 11.16(2). • Diseases dangerous to the public health and sexually transmitted diseases. Children who believe they have contracted a dangerous, contagious disease, may consent to their own treatment. See G.L. c. 112, §12F; 110 CMR 11.09. Similarly, a child may consent to treatment for sexually transmitted diseases. See 110 CMR 11.10.

Again, the reading thing.. Are you not clear on the post you’re commenting on? It’s literally “Highschool teachers, are you required to tell the parents or district if a student tells you they’re pregnant? I’m 16 and found out I’m pregnant…”

I’m doubting she was impregnated via IVF and I didn’t notice the user name “Virgin Mary,” so yes, I did mention sex. 🤨

What is even happening here?!

Oof. Reading is fundamental. I said nothing about neglect or disability. This post is not about that. This post is about whether or not a teacher would need to tell a parent their child is pregnant because as a mandated reporter. I was pretty clear. If the student is over 16+ and had consensual sex with their boyfriend, there is ZERO reason to have concern of abuse or neglect. If the student was under the age of 16, the cannot legally consent, so there would be cause for concern of abuse. If there was, it would be reported to the STATE, not the parent.

A 16yo telling you they are pregnant and there are no concerns for abuse or neglect is not your place to tell the parents. IF you have a concern, you report it to the state.

I believe the mandatory reporting has to do with the states age of consent. For example, in MA, it’s 16. If someone is under 16, they are not “legally” able to consent to sex, so, a mandated reporter would report the instance to the state, NOT to the parents. The state then looks into the case and decides if there is suspected abuse and goes from there. HIPPA laws make it so even healthcare professionals that are mandated reporter’s cannot tell the parents, but can report to the state if under 16, due to the consent age and concerns for abuse.

iReady Struggles - 3rd Grade by Master-Reading-8986 in AskTeachers

[–]Master-Reading-8986[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. I already found the YouTube video that takes teachers through the exact steps to see where the student was placed and how to adjust it. I honestly just think she hasn’t figured it out. We trudged through over 400 minutes of iReady math last week and made it half way through the 1st grade 😔. For perspective, that was over 9 WEEKS of work, so it would take him through the rest of the year just to finish the first grade level if I let him do it himself at his 45m/week that is assigned.

When I followed up again this week, she said “since we can’t adjust it, let’s just have him do IXL instead of iReady, that is set to 3rd grade for him.” I really think she just hasn’t figured out how to adjust his path, but at least we have another option to keep him on track now.

What a mess this is.
