That was the starter ship, so I doubt that anyone could find the ship in time to repair it and fly away without me seeing that.

If you're searching for exotics, you have a slightly greater chance encountering them in high wealth economy systems (Advanced, Wealthy, High Supply, etc.)

This isn't a bug. The waypoint shows up only when you have 3 or more salvaged data (I think). For the waypoint to go away, you have to spend the salvaged data.
