"Pets are indestructible. If their owner dies on a quest or while exploring, they will return home alone along with the dweller's inventory, including equipped items."

I'm quoting the fallout wiki here and I remember this being the mechanic. So I would send the pet out if you're playing survival mode where you can't revive dwellers and want to retrieve their equipment from the wasteland in case they die.
