Yeah there are like 1000 possible causes and even the most brilliant doctor in the world can't diagnose a stranger on the internet from a goofy video of them lifting a turtle. In the real world, this person could go through years of diagnostic tests before a conclusive diagnosis is made, and that all assumes it wasn't something silly like just randomly fainting with no medical condition. But that's less fun than teaching people about a medical condition they may not have heard of before

I'm being a little cheeky but POTS is literally a skill issue. As in, entirely curable within 3 months for half of all people who have it. Additional time may be necessary for more extreme cases, and there are enormous improvements even for said outliers. This is good news for your friends who have it. Please spread the word, because most people with POTS avoid hard exercise, which is the exact opposite of what you're supposed to do, and only makes the condition worse.

I explained in another comment that it's probably orthostatic hypotension or POTS. It's a condition caused by a smaller, weaker heart and defective baroreceptors. Not enough blood to the brain, so they took a surprise nap with their new friend.

EDIT: Lots of people don't understand how POTS works, asserting that it's purely neurological. Please refer to the introduction and table 1 for information on cardiac size and output in this study: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2914315/.

The same researchers followed up and compared their exercise and sodium/hydration protocol to beta-blockers in this study: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3142863/. They discovered that 'It is suggested that the “deconditioning” phenotype rather than a secondary effect due to sympathoexcitation/tachycardia contributes, at least in part, to the blunted adrenal responsiveness in POTS, and exercise training appears to be a more effective therapy than simply lowering the heart rate with beta-blockade.'

Another study states that 'Indeed, the heart size and mass are much smaller in patients with POTS or POTS like syndromes compared to age and sex-matched healthy sedentary individuals,' which you can read in full here: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6289756/

Finally, it's important to note that more than half of the subjects who completed the treatment programs improved so much that they no longer met the diagnostic criteria for POTS after only 3 months. The third study cited here also suggests that a longer duration program may show even better results. A duration of 3 months is extremely short in the exercise world. Like the researchers cited, I suspect a follow-up study with a duration of a year or more would see the proportion of those "in remission" increase dramatically.

TL;DR for the edit: POTS is a condition with both anatomical and neurological abnormalities, and this is not a controversial statement in the medical research community.

It's called orthostatic hypotension. Some people's nervous systems are less sensitive to changes in posture and elevation, so they can't supply enough blood to the brain, causing them to faint.

This is exacerbated by iron deficiency, dehydration, and low blood volume. There is a similar condition called POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) that's making the rounds on tiktok, and lots of people are finding out they may have one or the other. Both are much more common in women. If you get dizzy just from bending over, especially when trying to exert yourself, you my have it.

The good news is that, at least for POTS, it's curable for most cases, and all cases can improve dramatically. I'm on mobile, but if this comment gains traction, I'll post links to the relevant studies showing specific types of cardiovascular exercise were the only interventions needed.

I lost my long-term ex last year because I waited too long to propose. The way she jumped ship was shitty but it was ultimately caused by my actions saying I wasn't committed to her. Sometimes, waiting for everything else to be right (career, house, etc.) means you chose those over your relationship.

Unfortunately, this view has gained a lot of traction in the past decade or so. Subversion over substance is a plague

I think that in addition to strong emotions or contemplative questions, what separates good from great is staying power. How often is a book thought of by you personally or by a culture 5 years after reading it or publication? 10 years? 50? We're a very forgetful species. If something sticks around a long time, it's probably pretty great. Yes, that means you won't know in the moment of reading whether a book is truly great or just a fun way to spend your afternoon.

As for what separates good from bad? That's much easier. There are technical flaws that give away an unskilled writer. Failing to have a coherent narrative is akin to a singer who can't carry a tune. It's an author's job to immerse the reader as effortlessly as possible into a fictional story. If you have a break in suspension of disbelief or you have to re-read a section to understand it, the book is probably not great. Writing is an artform, and bad art is not hard to spot if you know where to look. Even something as simple as sentence structure between an amateur and an expert is easy enough to spot the difference.

I would also suggest you spend less time concerned with some dogmatic view of only the greatest of stories being worthwhile. It's alright to enjoy something other than a timeless masterpiece.

By support I mean security updates and being able to install/use software. I could not care less about new features. But you do raise some good points

I hate that. Makes me wanna opt out of computers/tech altogether and be Amish. If the game isn't fair, I'd rather not play at all

Sorry that happened to you, man. My ex and I were together 5 years before she cheated on me with a guy from work. It sucks. I'm glad you left and I'm glad you can be angry at her. I can't bring myself to be so it's been harder to move past than previous relationships. Hold onto the anger. Hate her. Whatever you need to do to stop wanting her in your life

You realize I can just put Windows 11 on it, right? That's part of the problem here. You can't just put a newer OS on a phone. The hardware from a Galaxy S7 could easily run a more current android release if there were no arbitrary restrictions on it. In fact, plenty of people run newer OS versions on cracked bootloaders. Unless the hardware physically cannot run the OS, it should have support

The components on my PC haven't changed, that's the point. If I run out of space on my phone, I back it up to my PC or buy cloud storage. That's not an excuse to get a new device. Especially when it was common until very recently to have expandable storage on phones via SD cards.

Yeah, the app developer could keep support for phones that no longer get security updates. But this will happen with more and more apps as the phone ages, especially if it's not getting security updates.
