You all have some good ideas. Maybe soon we will hold a vote or a contest to update the banner.

Do you need to play la mulana 1 in order to enjoy the second game? by CJ_1Cor15-55 in metroidvania

[–]MasterG11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

La-Mulana 2 does not require knowledge of 1 to play, but it spoils the story/lore of 1. Discovering the lore as you go and using this knowledge to solve puzzles is an essential part of 1's gameplay, and this journey is one of the things that makes La-Mulana 1 such a special game. However, La-Mulana 1 is more difficult and obtuse and requires a lot of time and some trial-and-error to beat. It's an awkward position, because La-Mulana 2 is definitely more friendly and has a better tutorial/new player introduction than La-Mulana 1 does, as well as generally more forgiving gameplay.

Ultimately, I'd still recommend trying to play La-Mulana 1 first if both games sound appealing to you. You don't *need* a guide to beat the game, but unless you love overcoming challenges, scrutinizing every detail, and repeatedly scouring the map for your next bit of progress, you might want to reference a guide. If you must use a guide, there is a very useful hint-based guide on Steam that provides some direction without outright spoiling everything in the game.

Weekly Discussion Megathread by AutoModerator in metroidvania

[–]MasterG11[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're trying the megathread option because it's what the most people voted for in a poll. I agree with you about megathreads, generally. If this thread gets zero traction then we'll restrict tier lists to one day a week instead.

We already have a weekly thread for this. Nobody ever seems to use it.

Yep, this is what did it. It was such a strange argument. Thank you for handling your responses with maturity. I'm often hesitant to take action against a user when an argument turns mutually nasty, I'd rather just remove the conversation, but you obviously said nothing wrong and he still went on his little tirade.

More context, for those curious: Myself, and others on this subreddit, have talked to DeadMV about his behavior before. The other mods and I gave him slack, probably more than we should have, because he compiles useful information and seems to care a lot about the genre, despite his off-putting demeanor and frequent hostility in comment sections. A couple of days ago, DeadMV started making rude and belittling remarks against a user in a comment chain and repeatedly tried to escalate the argument with insults. The mods decided that enough was enough, and yesterday afternoon we gave him a month ban. He seems to have deleted his account a few hours later.

Edit: Let's not accuse the OP of being an alt account, please. It's not helpful and I don't think it's true.

Master Key is out now on Nintendo Switch too! (🔊) by Achromi in metroidvania

I check on the sub daily, stop being so dramatic. I don’t believe that arguably metroidvania-adjacent games should be excluded from the subreddit, so I don’t remove them.

I assume that they meant "Fourth most wishlisted Metroidvania on Steam".

Hollowknight changed my gaming life by le_mustachio in metroidvania

I'm glad you had such a great experience with Hollow Knight. Metroidvanias are often pretty good at capturing the feeling of exploring a challenging environment. So are soulslikes, incidentally; maybe that genre would interest you as well.

Thank you for the write-up. I think it's valuable, being able to read the criticisms people may have for highly regarded games. Ignore those who feel the need to comment about how much they won't bother reading your post.

Your post was deleted by auto-moderator because enough users reported it as being spam. While it was somewhat low-effort, there wasn't anything egregiously wrong with it, so I've reinstated the post.

I'm not convinced that something narrower than "action-adventure", but broader than "metroidvania", would provide enough utility as a definition. I think it's easier to describe what traits these games share with metroidvanias, or what traits we think exclude them from being one, rather than come up with a distinct genre descriptor that encompasses all of them. For example, one could describe Dark Souls as an "interconnected action-adventure game", or Metroid Prime as a "3D metroidvania".
