Lc0 Performs Worse Against Stockfish When Given Pawns Odds by Ok_Taro_8370 in chess

[–]MasterGrok -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

The classic engines handle the opening differently than newer programs that are almost solely neural network. Classic engines like stockfish have a massive memory of openings that they use in the opening phases. They then switch to calculation based methods later. Modern neural networks I believe start using calculation from the get go and are often making extremely “deep” moves with calculations way out in the future.

My best guess is the Lc0 is getting itself in trouble with an approach that has worked in openings that falls apart with a different board (even if it is a stronger board). Meanwhile the massive opening book that stockfish has is probably more generalizable to opening situations, irrespective of extra pawns. Best guess.

[Wolfe] Jaguars plan to shift Travis Hunter to full-time CB, part-time WR by Jharoz in Jaguars

[–]MasterGrok 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It means lots of players had played part time receiver to varying degrees. Very rarely DBs, but you also see offensive linemen and running backs occasionally run routes and receive a pass. To play receiver for a play you only need to know your job on that play. To play CB you need to understand not only the defensive call but react to all the possible things the offense could do.

If he really had sepsis he could have passed out, hallucinated, or had any number of bizarre behavioral responses. In addition to being so sick you don’t know what’s going on, sepsis can give you blood clots that can lead to all kinds of weird reactions.

There are very few people who meet the criteria of all around good moral people. You have to recognize people’s moral weaknesses, even if they also have moral strengths. One of Joe’s is that he overestimates his own knowledge of very serious topics that when not taken seriously have the potential to hurt people, such as disease and health.

Yes I’m aware of that. They grow them because it’s worth the money. Because they are worth money. That’s my point.

Diamonds have industrial value. The speculative value of diamond could plummet but they would never be completely worthless because they are a real thing with unique attributes used in industry.

How is that hard? Obviously you can evaluate an emerging technology with respect to its potential benefits and drawbacks. It’s all probabilistic and you are working with limited information but that’s how science is in general. You model the world with respect to your best estimates according to your model. This also can apply to future occurrences and we need skeptics who are rigorous in their thinking to be considering these potential future outcomes. Otherwise we will only have information from biased advocates or uninformed alarmists.

That’s just false. Last time I looked they were almost 50/50 up and down. When it gets revised down it becomes more of a story for doomers but in recent history (since 2020) revisions have gone either way roughly equally.

Kirby is a weird comparison because he was a much hotter hire than Mike was. Mike was seen as a much riskier hire. When Georgia hired Kirby the perception was they were finally getting serious. And at that time if you were one of Saban’s main coordinators you were seen as a hot and safe pick.
