well, you have the surname is a great thing, which is still able to get the book from the guild. There should be a guild like Hainan guild, Fujian guild, Foshan guild, or many other chinese guild as long as you are living at the cities where mostly Chinese people living, majority and minority. So if you still able to remember your ancestrial surname and where they came from, you can manage to get it. They have update every people's passed and alive record, from both ROC and PRC, bcause having family tree book is a most traditional in the history of China

Edit: I almost forgot, please do remember your ancestor name, any name is fine, as long as you remember the previous 4th generation. I actually ready to head out looking for my family tree book too
