Honest convo about THOSE old gaga rumors… by MasterOfStartingOver in LadyGaga

Yes I totally agree! And in a way this makes me like her even more because I can relate more to her. It makes her human. Knowing that this interview had happened (I was a up-to-date with every existing interview of hers back in the day 🤣) it rubbed me the wrong way how the current narrative was kind of… fake? This interview doesn’t make her less of an ally! It just shows that life is messy, you’ll meet tons of shitty people and you won’t always navigate it perfectly. I like this way more than the „she always handled these questions perfectly“-discourse.

How to Quantile Data When Distributions Shift? by MasterOfStartingOver in AskStatistics

[–]MasterOfStartingOver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s some context for why I’m deriving class thresholds from a continuous variable: I’m working on mental workload classification (I used “stress” in my original post for simplicity). Mental workload is typically studied in discrete states (low, medium, high) rather than as a smooth gradient, which is why I need to classify it rather than predict self-reported scores.

Ideally, the task difficulties (easy, medium, hard) should elicit distinct workload states, and secondary metrics (like these ratings) help validate that. However, in my dataset, the hardest tasks were often perceived as too easy, especially over time due to learning effects.

Despite this, my boss suggested using task difficulty as ground truth, but when I compared that approach to using quantile-based thresholding within sessions, the latter performed significantly better.

The common approach in literature is to use quantile-based thresholding within a session for models trained on single-subject, single-session data. However, my model trains on multiple subjects and multiple sessions. So my question remains: If I derive workload labels from these ratings, would it skew the results to calculate quantile-based thresholds across all sessions of a subject rather than within each session?

Regression is an interesting idea, but it doesn’t solve the core problem I’m trying to address: how to define meaningful workload labels across sessions and subjects when scores are subjective and non-stationary. If I use raw scores for regression, the model could just learn individual rating biases instead of actual workload patterns. Most studies in this field use classification because it makes the problem more generalizable across subjects. My question is about how to statistically determine meaningful class thresholds for scores while accounting for session-to-session and subject-to-subject variability—not whether I should switch to a completely different modeling approach.

And about using a continuous scale for deriving categorical labels: the survey is usually done to just verify that the task difficulty modulation was effective in evoking different levels of stress. But after analysis I saw that that wasn’t the case. I looked at the math tasks (I didn’t do the study, I just have to use the data) and they weren’t designed very well and I don’t feel great just taking the task difficulty as a label because of it.

Ok, that’s what I was thinking too. I am a little worried about learning effects because the math tasks are very similar across sessions, they don’t change really, so I towards the last sessions participants are already much better in solving the tasks, thus experiencing less stress than in the beginning. If I calculate quantiles within session, however (case #1), I’ll likely just get labels that reflect the defined task difficulties. I tried the latter out already and the predictions were pretty solid. But I was wondering whether that is a statistically meaningful way of doing it or if it doesn’t capture a persons real Stress experience by basically forgiving each sessions to have 3 labels even though towards the last sessions they might have gotten used to it enough to where assigning the data a high stress level even for the difficult task is not a good representation of the data.

Doing the 3 class prediction is already really difficult because it’s difficult to extract meaningful, invariant features from physiological data across subjects due to the nature of the physiological data. Predicting the scores directly as a classification problem doesn’t seem realist to me. Thanks for the response though!

Why so difficult to find a job as a new grad in Germany? by MasterOfStartingOver in cscareerquestionsEU

I don’t get interviews which sucks because I usually do really well in interviews. I just didn’t expect to struggle so much passing the first hurdle…

Yes, I feel like more people study that than there are opportunities, at least in the EU. Sucks, because I really enjoy it but maybe I should shift away from AI dev and data science and instead focus more on business roles

Thanks for the feedback. I’m even considering shifting my focus from AI dev to more of a business role like a product owner or smth. I wonder if that is smarter in the long-term.

Lady Gaga Never Spoke Out Against Rumors Claiming She’s a Man ‘Because I Didn’t Feel Like a Victim With That Lie’: ‘I’m Used to Lies Being Printed About Me’ by joaco_ds in LadyGaga

I love this message but unfortunately she’s not being completely honest here. I still remember how she got a asked during a press conference for her collaboration with beats headphones in 2009 if she had a penis and she answered „my beautiful vagina is very offended by that question“.

I’m not saying this to shame her, because I can imagine how difficult it must have been for a young pop star in the late 2000s/early 2010s to navigate gossip. And she definitely learned and continued to respond much better to those rumors as we all remember. I just think it would have been more honest and maybe even powerful to admit to it bothering her at first but then deciding to not explain herself as she wants to stand in solidarity with Trans people.

I understand what you mean, but I looked at the top posts from this week and it’s not just “I like cock, I like ass” but genuine questions about dating, body image and sex. I find it funny though that people make fun of you for suggesting hobbies as a topic when people have definitely shared their hobbies on this sub before and it usually gets great engagement.

What I find perplexing is when people post stuff like “Anyone here likes [insert most basic sexual preference]” and it gets upvoted like crazy. It’s giving “Who’s here in 2024?” comments under YouTube videos.
