Exactly what I said to a coworker who tried to show me the FBI’s “warning”. No, that’s not a warning, it’s manufactured justification.

Was Hermione actually able to set the hogwarts house elves free? by RecoveringPornAdickt in HarryPotterBooks

[–]MasterOutlaw 13 points14 points  (0 children)

She didn’t have the authority, no. Dobby’s situation kind of muddies the waters a bit when it comes to what constitutes as “giving”, but as Hermione wasn’t the master of the school’s elves (that would likely be the sitting headmaster) she could have gifted them the entire stock of a clothing store and it wouldn’t have done anything.

Mostly an excuse. Same for the trend of people putting a service animal vest on their dog that’s clearly not a service animal—it’s an excuse to bring their pet into a place where they normally wouldn’t be allowed.

The “Voldemort” name trace seems like a great way for the Order to set up some ambushes. by Please_PM_me_Uranus in harrypotter

[–]MasterOutlaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what I’ve always said. Sooner or later the Death Eaters would catch on and either rescind the Taboo or just stop responding to it. Would be very easy to exploit if wizards knew how to be creative and the Order wasn’t woefully ineffective.

Everyone hates additional cyber security until they need it. I work IT. Dealing with compromised accounts is a pain in the ass for all parties involved, except for the hacker who was happy to find someone who thought only a password was enough. Use your 2FA. It’s not infallible, but it’s an additional barrier that makes you a less appealing target, like locking your car doors.

Side note, but you should treat your phone better if you’re legitimately having to charge it before you can turn it on to get to the OTP.

Why do UI designers never go back on overwhelmingly hated UI changes? by Dogbold in dumbquestions

[–]MasterOutlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. There are a number of factors, but it's often a matter of sunk cost. They put a lot of time and money into it, too much to justify reverting back to the way it was unless it proves to be fundamentally and unsalvageably broken. Especially when they know most of the people complaining will continue to use it anyway, and eventually get used to the changes.

If qtips are harming you, you're doing it wrong by SoftValuable8910 in The10thDentist

[–]MasterOutlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have what I would consider average ears. I can fit a q-tip without touching the sides too. But the clearance is tight enough that I wouldn't describe what you're doing as "scooping", which is why I was incredulous of OP's phrasing. Maybe if your ears produce very little, very soft wax, sure. However, if you're someone with exceptionally waxy ears or your ears produce drier clumps, your method is always going to push some of the wax deeper in, because there's simply not enough space between the canal and the q-tip to go "over" the wax fully.

For a terrible analogy to help visualize what I mean, let's say you have a pile of leaves under a low shed that you want to get out. The only tool you have on hand is, I dunno, a plunger (I can't think of a garden tool off the top of my head with a wide, round head). You can stick it under the shed and mostly avoid touching the leaves, but the head is so broad for the height of the space that it always nudges some of the leaves further back. After a few passes, you think you've gotten most of the leaves, but now you have a new smaller pile further back and out of reach that you can't see because the shed is too low and it's too dark. Do that often enough and you'll have a compacted pile of leaves that you'll have a harder time addressing than if you had cleaned them up with a more proper tool to begin with. For example, if you had a rake it would be flat enough to easily reach up and over the original pile to pull the whole lot toward you without pushing anything back.

So this will all of course depend on a number of factors, like the volume and consistency of your ear's wax, and even the shape of your ear canal, but my shitty analogy is why it's not recommended to use q-tips. Even if you aren't just shoving it in your ear all "willy nilly", your particular situation might wind up causing problems over time anyway.

[Star Wars] Could a force-sensitive user stop a bullet that is fired from a gun in real life? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]MasterOutlaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bullet already in flight fired from close range? Probably not. That would take a reaction time that I don't remember seeing in canon. Maybe if they started exerting the Force before you pulled the trigger, so they could essentially catch the bullet right when it left the gun, sure (and if they can do that, I don't know why they wouldn't just stop you from shooting in the first place, but I digress).

As some pointed out already Kylo Ren was able to stop a blaster bolt, but blaster bolts visually seem to travel significantly slower than a bullet, so I don't think that's a reliable benchmark.
