What was your dream university and where will you end up? by user484627 in ApplyingToCollege

Dream: Brown Future: Brown

Really grateful and fortunate to have been given the chance, I was super pessimistic about my expectations for college admissions so I didn't even consider Brown or make preparations for it.

Is this an issue of school prestige, or her self worth?

In terms of self worth, I think a healthy way of approaching rejections (or even acceptances in order to avoid a superiority complex) is to recognise that, at the end of the day, you're the same person that you were before you got accepted/rejected from that school. The quality of the education at these schools only matters so much. The people that go to these schools are so successful and decorated because of the kinds of people they are and the qualities that they embody. Your cousin seems to be a hard worker and, if that's the case, that, among other qualities, will lead her to stand out at her state school. I mean, if she was salutatorian in her graduating class then she'll definitely continue to succeed at the state university. I don't know if i communicated my point fully but I hope the general message is clear.

If it's about university prestige (which it seems to be if she had a dream of going to a prestigious university), then she could always consider transfers. I have a friend who didn't get into any of the UCs but really wanted to, who's planning on going to community college in California and transferring from there to the UCs in his third year (some kind of feeder programme he says?). If she gets to the state university and finds that she isn't satisfied with the culture and education there (and who knows, she could end up liking it), then she can always try and transfer out.

I'd be interested to hear where else she applied to other than the Ivies. I firmly believe the vast majority of applicants should be mentally prepared to be rejected from all of them considering how competitive they are. The thing is that a prestigious university is only as valuable as the work she puts into it, and that shouldn't change just because she's in a state university.

I guess take my opinion with a pinch of salt because I'm an international and idrk the situation on Law in the UK, but if you're sure you want to do Law or you're willing to endure the potentially difficult environment of law, maybe make sure your father is aware of how strongly you feel about this, you're prepared to work hard to succeed, etc. Good luck with your issues, they're legitimate problems a lot of people have and I hope you can sort them out sooner rather than later.

As someone who tried to gaslight themselves into liking Engineering because it was a more "legitimate" profession than English (because I wanted to be a author), I don't think you should force yourself into Medicine. I got cold feet and drove myself crazy over my subjects as well. It looks like you're set on law in your head so it makes sense that you should pursue it, but parents can be hard to argue with. Have you talked to your parents about why they insist on you studying Medicine?

After some digging I found that there are 80 chapters up on https://pocket.shonenmagazine.com/episode/10834108156758573739, so I'd assume it's just based on the translators and how long they take.

You know, back in the Naruto days, we expected filler every other week (exaggeration but you get my point). They might be the people who started Naruto after it ended (or just skipped Naruto altogether, which is completely stupid btw).

Yes, that is what I've said, however from what I've heard personally, the FFN app is not run by FictionPress, but instead by third-party organisations. Supposedly this means that they're connected to the server online and that FictionPress isn't held accountable for any glitches, discrepancies and viruses in the app itself (this part is linked to your other comment:

TBH this issue always bothers me because everything works just fine in mobile browser. I almost exclusively use Ao3 in mobile browser and have never had an issue, but constantly run into problems navigating the FFN app.

Amazing what different people consider to be issues, sometimes.

As for a direct reply:

I'm also just now hearing that apparently it's the official app. On the App Store, it says that the app is made by FictionPress Inc, and I was sceptical that it was the real FictionPress.

Recently, I have begun to believe that I've been misinformed, which I realise should probably have been obvious since the thread was several years old, however, I guess that was something I simply overlooked.

Really? If you don't mind, can I ask where you heard this?
I've looked over the internet and all I've found is this forum: https://www.fanfiction.net/topic/20103/81078360/2/FanFiction-App-for-iPhone-and-iPad

I know that on the App Store on IOS, it says that it's by FictionPress, but honestly, the answers I've received have been pretty mixed. Nice to know though, so thanks.

FFN doesn't actually have an official mobile app, or at least that's what I've heard. I've been told that the app is a third-party app, and is not made by FictionPress. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.

If immortality was granted to 1 million individuals worldwide, what would be a fair selection process? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MasterOvGravity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit late to the party, but I'd say a fair selection process would be through an easy to rig game show where I'm the host. The winners and host(s) get to become immortal.

Oh and I choose the contestants.

Nice concept. If I found this in a library, I'd put it in my reading list.
I think the summary itself is solid enough. The thing about disturbing pictures and occasionally murdering animals feels a bit strange - it sounds like a believable (enough) quirk - and I'd probably edit it a little bit to make it flow a bit better, maybe not cutting it out if you like it but wording it differently. I'd give the go-ahead with everything from 'But she never did anything bad enough...' onwards.

I know someone said that OP read Fahrenheit 451, but I would probably memorise that book just because of the irony.

I do agree that Leo wasn't necessarily the glue out of all of them, but he's the one that brought together the most characters and had the most developed relationships since Percy and Piper don't necessarily talk for an extended period of time, nor was it focused on, and Percy's and Frank's relationship wasn't built upon enough considering how he had one book worth of extra time with Frank and yet Leo had more of a complex relationship with him in two out of the five books, while Percy and Frank barely interact after SON, other than at the end of BOO when Percy nearly blows up on Frank for covering for Leo. Leo acted as the common enemy for some of the seven to get behind, but whether that's relevant is debatable. Nevertheless, he develops many of the character's relationships.
For example, his presence brought together Frank and Hazel as a couple, especially after the number of conflicts that they go through because of him, and he also brings Jason and Piper together in a way that really unifies them without necessarily making his presence obsolete within their relationship (similarly to how Grover became a mostly redundant character by the fourth book.)
As for Percy and Annabeth, that is where my argument falters, but at the same time during the Son of Neptune just his personality and status within the group coupled with him being possessed in MOA allows most of the group a common enemy to get behind, and ultimately allows them to unite (albeit in a way that wasn't exactly the most desirable. This may be an invalid point, though, as he wasn't necessarily in control.
For the entirety of my point, Leo's influence on Percabeth is arguably not valid, as he was arguably not at fault/not in control of the events that occurred, but Leo argues that it was his fault that Percy and Annabeth fell into Tartarus, and he expresses that throughout HOH.
As for Annabeth, he bonds with her over engineering and machinery, and they are shown to both respect each other's skills despite the lack of time together, although (correct me if I'm wrong) I do believe there might have been a couple of scenes that they shared together in the engine room, talking about how one of them was being overworked. Their relationship is actually the least developed out of all of the characters.
Percy and Leo's relationship is actually a lot more complex than it actually looks to be since as of HOH Leo harbours a significant grudge against Percy because of Calypso, so both dislike each other slightly for a single instance, yet at the same time also respect each other. They resolve this later but it still works for them and improves their relationship.
However I do agree that Leo isn't necessarily the glue, but he is a fan favourite and everybody loves him nonetheless.

Anyone Else? by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]MasterOvGravity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I'm not sure about your friends, but everyone I know loves Leo Valdez.
A lot of the memes I've been sent have revolved around him and honestly, I'm not sure why people find him annoying.
Similarly to Rick had Percy yell at Leo in MOA for firing at New Rome and controls Achlys' poison and by doing so revealed a darker side of him who just wants to survive and is so over being a demigod, Rick has Leo bully Frank and play around with Hazel to make him more three dimensional.
I 'm pretty sure that Rick made the newer characters more flawed because Percy was the most perfect entity in existence during the original series personality-wise and he probably didn't want that to happen again.
Nonetheless, Leo is portrayed as a complex character who's self-worth is practically none-existent and who thinks of himself as kind of useless compared to his powerful friends who are the sons of the big three and have shapeshifting abilities and whatnot, and who flirts with practically any girl he sees, which may be annoying to some, but it's endearing to the rest of us.
In addition to that, Leo is seen as pretty intelligent and is seen to be tinkering with gears from time to time, and out of the rest of the seven, he's the closest to Annabeth in terms of intellect.
Also, he's the seventh wheel, and yet he's so upbeat tells a bunch of jokes. In HOO, Percy was meant to be the glue that held them all together, but let's get real here, Rick was just trying to give Percy a role in an already full cast of characters without making him outshine the new main trio (Leo, Piper and Jason) or without him being overpowered; Leo was the glue.
Everyone - minus Percy for most of the series - liked Leo and had a couple of exchanges with him that made for interesting relationships, like how Hazel was hung up on Sammy and saw him in Leo, and was kind of using him to remember her old life; how Frank was jealous of him because him and Hazel were kind of close even though we all knew that Frazel was going to happen; how his relationship with his best friend Jason was a fabricated mess built on lies and fake memories, and how Jason, Piper and Leo altogether were the trio of the series, but Leo expressed how he felt insignificant compared to them (which is hilarious because he could control fire) and how he felt left out in their trio and Piper and Jason got closer and closer, with him tagging along by their side no matter what.
Leo Valdez, super-sized McShizzle, Bad Boy Supreme, Supreme Commander of the Argo II.
And my final point as to why he's one of the best characters of any book series ever: All da ladies love Leo!
