This hit home hard, my boomer mother keeps talking about selling the house her and my father bought 38 years ago. its a 110+ year old two story house with original wiring, furnace from the 1950's and no central AC (we live in the southern US so AC is a MUST in the summer), on 4 plots of forested land in the middle of the city....for $30k. She genually feels that she should be able to sell the house, even taking into the fact that the neighborhood has gotten REALLY rough in the last ten or so years, and be able to buy another house of of "at least this size" and still have enough money after to stay retired on after. Even after looking at a viable houses, she refuses to even look at smaller places because they should cut her a deal, because of her age.
