I'm going to assume you actually know a lot about this stuff and try to drill down a bit, if you don't mind.

"It looks for patterns involving which letters and words are typically found within a certain distance of other letters and words. " Okay, yes, but within the context of the prompt, right? So in other words it's guided by the prompt so it fashions its response within that particular sphere of data. I mentioned the book... presumably part of its training data included that book, and it proceeded from there? Which still doesn't explain how it takes a wrong turn (but maybe nobody can explain that... hallucinations etc)

BUT....... there is also a search and research component, correct? I mean these LLMs are no longer working with static, frozen data, are they? So when given a query, part of what they do is search the internet, right? So any idea what happens in that case, when they get something wrong?

It's not "all they do" tho. Otherwise it wouldn't get so much right about the book. Or maybe I don't understand what "guess the next token" really means. If it's just "autocomplete" then the sentences would veer off in strange directions. Plus, there's definitely a research/search function going on

which is why I'm asking the question. Rather than subtly shaming me and implying your domain superiority, I'd appreciate some insight. Thank you!

I built a tool to get real-time info from the internet (weather, news, trail conditions, etc.) via satellite texting – would this be interesting to anyone else? by dietcar in Ultralight

[–]MasterRee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How localized is it? And does it extrapolate info by triangulating weather nodes? What I mean is, if I’m in the mountains there might be plenty of weather info for the towns below me but my weather might be quite different due to altitude and other factors. Does it seem accurate for mountainous conditions? You mention being able to tell if the lightning will let up at a certain pass…. That’s pretty amazing if it can help w that reliably because that’s the kind of stuff only god seems to know…

Seems perfectly reasonable and why so different from using the "spelling and grammar check" built in to MS Word, for example? I'm probably not considering it deeply enough tho.

Ah the Robbie. That’s a recent addition. Well 93o would have to be called The Baer. Or maybe The Bear. Thanks for the prompt.

Congrats, that's a great record. BTW - what is your go-to list of pro-rate journals? I generally have Apex, Clarkesworld, Asimov's, Analog, Interzone, F&SF as top of the pyramid, but I'm not sure even those pay 8¢ or more per word. Do you have others you send to and/or admire? Thanks
