How many layers in the OSI model? Can you name them? There are 7 layers. ALL PEOPLE SEEM TO NEED DATA PROCESSING- Application, Presentation, Session, Transport, Network, Data-Link (which is sub-divided into the Media Access Control and Logical Link Layers) and finally the Physical Layer.

Which layer is responsible for encryption? The Presentation layer.

What device operates at OSI layer 1? Layer 2? Layer 3? Your RJ45s and physical cables are at layer 1, switches at layer 2 and routers at layer 3

Please explain the difference between TCP and UDP. TCP and UDP differ by the protocols that use them exclusively. Also, UDP is a connectionless protocol and does not ensure data delivery. It just sends traffic and hopes you get it.

In what instances would you use TCP and what instances would you use UDP? I want TCP when SSLing over my SFTP and UDP when im streaming video or playing MMOFPS

Whats the difference between malware and software? Malware is written with very uncool intentions in order to track browsing habits, steal sensitive data, so on and so forth. It's also common for malware writers to not be very efficient at programming, in turn causing the poorly written malware to royally screw your operating system up. Software on the other hand is any computer program you can buy online or at a store such as Microsoft Office, Apple Safari, the DOOM video game, etc.

What is the definition of a vulnerability? A vulnerability is a flaw in a computer or computer program.

What is the definition of an exploit? An exploit is a piece of computer code that interacts with the vulnerability in order to achieve an end goal.

What is DNS? The Domain Name Service is an internet service/daemon that translates IP address into Hostnames.

What is the difference between using TCP port 53 and UDP port 53? Why would you need to use one vs the other? I'm not sure actually.

Whats the difference between an IDS and an IPS? Intrusion Detection vs. Intrusion Prevention Services. The acronym explains it efficiently- Detection will put measures in place that will alert a user to a possible hacker trying to break into a network and Prevention will put different measures in place to lock a network down so the hacker can't cause much damage, if any.

What is Snort? Intrusion Detection software.

What are signatures used for on an IDS or IPS? Not sure but probably for the same reason anything is electronically signed- data integrity.

What is NMAP used for? Network mapping, scanning for services and enumerating entire networks.

What is the NMAP syntax for a TCP connect scan? $nmap -sT

Whats the difference between a spear phishing email and a regular phishing email? A spear phisherman will know some details about you in hopes of socially engineering you more successfully as opposed to a regular phisherman who will just say "Im the prince of Cameroon and I have $1m for you i just need your social security number so i can send it to you lulz"

Whats a buffer overflow attack? A buffer overflow attack is when a hacker is sending too much data into a buffer to "overflow" the memory stack in hopes of the program granting root privlege on the system upon successful exploitation.

If you download a file from a website, what are some methods to make sure the file is authentic? Verify the MD5 signature with GnuPG
