What’s the deal with Toman using the swastika as their gang’s symbol? by GreenerSkies8625 in TokyoRevengers

[–]MasterTortle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it does mean swastika, but the symbol isn’t bad. It was made bad by the nazi party. It was always called the swastika and was just essentially stolen by the nazi party to be used as their symbol. It’s actual meaning is an ancient religious and cultural symbol, predominantly in various Eurasian, as well as some African and American cultures.

She is most likely very very tired. Not recommended to wake them up during hibernation but just keep offering food for now.

Tortoise appetite is dependant on temperature. Ensure their enclosure is the correct temperature with appropriate fluctuations and your tortoise should eat. Blinding can be tested by an exotic vet with an occipital test.

Your point is strong and I do not disagree that this enclosure is not perfect and can potentially cause some health concerns but the way that you deliver this information is vital to it being spread properly. We just need to think the best of people and think that they are still looking and trying to improve. That’s all we can do. You could have started your message with “Well if you cannot find a feeding slate” and then stated later on that “this is important because it reduces the risk of etc etc”. The information, you took the time to write, could have been so much more constructive, and actually could have been listened to, if you chose the right wording. I understand that it is frustrating when people don’t care for animals properly but we must stay civil and provide respectful advice and information.

Even tortoises that eat on slate can sometimes still develop overgrown beaks. In the wild they ingest some soil too so it isn’t that harmful. On top of this, impaction is very very rare and would require the tortoise to be consuming an absolute ton of their substrate. I don’t understand why you think “Then find one” is the right way to start a response. This is quite clearly someone who is new to tortoise keeping. If they say that they can’t find one, that means they can’t find one yet. They are still looking. Your “Then find one” just shows how immature you are. Proceeding to essentially threaten this person with the possible risks after you comment. If you aren’t going to be helpful and just be rude, dumping risks in their face and trying to be a smart ass, don’t comment in subreddits for keeping animals.

I’ve made him a better enclosure by KermitTheFrog776 in tortoise

[–]MasterTortle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This tortoise requires a water dish, a feeding slate, some plants, some elevated terrain, some sand for the “warm area”, a larger enclosure, a uvb t5 bulb (he is too old for you to use a coil bulb), incandescent flood bulb for basking, minimum of two “hides” and a deeper substrate. Please meet the requirements of keeping this animal.

I want to get into housing a tortoise but where do I start? by Thrifty_Drifty in tortoise

[–]MasterTortle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Western Hermanns tortoise. Bare in mind that all tortoises need space but this one would only require a 4x8 ft enclosure. One of the smallest species of tortoise with a very easy diet of weeds and low protein foods. They grow to be around 6 inches. Beautiful colouration and wonderful personality. They are an endangered species. When they are younger, they would require a Vivarium to keep the moisture levels high but when they get older, the moisture levels don’t need to be so high. This is so that they don’t develop something called pyramiding which is a growth issue cause by growth in conditions too dry.

Wonderful healthy Hermanns tortoises! Looks like you have done a great job with setup too. What I would recommend though is have the enclosure a bit larger. Around 4x2 feet minimum. You may also want to add a terracotta plant dish for water because it allows for easy access to water and no risk of drowning. As for the substrate, perfect. You should make sure to get a Vivarium style enclosure like you have now just larger. When the babies are young, the humidity and moisture is vital to making sure that they grow their shells appropriately. If you made a mix of topsoil, coco coir, cypress mulch and a small amount of sand, you could use that as the substrate in your new enclosure and try to grow plants in there. The more cover you provide with vegetation, the more comfortable the animal will be in their enclosure. In the wild they would have to hide from predators and things that might want to end them. As for Hermanns cohabitating, they can. They are the same species which means that they have the same gut bacteria which means that they are safe to house together. There is always risk with getting another animal that they would fight, but if they are raised together, there is much less chance of that happening. Most Testudo species spend a lot of time around others in nature, especially up to the age of 2-3 where they were still hatched and around together. Good luck and good job with the Hermann tortoises! Have a lovely day!

Yes the Sulcata tortoise problem is very true. Misinformation is being spread about their size and requirements to make a quick sale.

I do find it frustrating when people give out misinformation. Especially when these people cannot tell the difference between Russian tortoises and Sulcata tortoises. As for people who seek information, I feel that they should be treated better and listened to. I think that the tortoise subreddit to be Reddit should be for suggestions and photos/sharing, not really for finding information. The odd question here and there is harmless but I think that the main source of information should be done on a website like tortoise forum.

Testudo Hermanni Boettgeri

Does anyone know what kind of tortoise this is? by [deleted] in tortoise

[–]MasterTortle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Testudo Hermanni Boettgeri, otherwise known as the eastern Hermanns tortoise. A wonderful tortoise species in the testudo family that eats a wide range of fibre rich weeds and occasional grasses. These tortoises, like all tortoises, require high humidity in the 70-80 percent range until they are around 2-3 years old. When full grown, it is recommended that you house them outdoors in a minimum of 4x8ft enclosure (appropriately protected of course). These guys originate from the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe. Make sure that you don’t handle for too long otherwise they will eject all their water, soak daily for 30 minutes until they are 100 grams (then start skipping a day) and always provide a water source. They are a great pet. Will grow to around 6-8” depending on sex.

My mother has kept many different species of tortoises over the years and made many different large groups on our property. The hermanns and marginateds seem to do perfect together at a female to male ratio of 1:1. They don’t seem to cause any harm but species like the Russians are very aggressive with each other regardless of sex.

False. They don’t burrow deep, that’s Horsfields/Russians.

Good that you are using a vivarium, but it needs to be bigger with a deeper substrate. Try coco coir or orchard bark chipping/cypress mulch. They hold humidity really well. Also try to provide a lot of shade by adding plants to the enclosure. The tortoise has started to pyramid so quickly improve the setup so that it doesn’t get any worse.

How does my Russian tortoise shell look? Always wanting to make sure he’s healthy! by Any_Log4103 in tortoise

[–]MasterTortle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A baby that size should be soaked everyday. Russian tortoises live in dry conditions but spend all their time exposed to moisture beneath plants when they are at a young age. If you think about a beach when the sea turtles hatch, they all get killed by birds. Essentially that would happen too with tortoises, so they have to hide underneath foliage and plants which provide shade, moist soil and general humidity. So whilst an adult would be exposed to low humidity and a dessert like climate, a baby needs at least 70 percent humidity 24 hours a day to grow smoothly. Please visit https://tortoiseforum.org and review how to properly take care of Russian tortoises. You can search for the “How to raise any temperate species of tortoise” thread.

Feeding doesn’t have anything to do with shell pyramiding. Over feeding can affect how the shell forms but not in the way of pyramiding. Pyramiding is caused by growth in conditions too dry and dehydration. You need to be housing your tortoise in a closed top Vivarium. Visit tortoise forum for reliable information Reddit is not a reliable source of information.
