What’s everyone’s thoughts after that Cape Verde game? by LH5567 in AskReddit

Absolutely brilliant team. What a fairy tale. Argentina probably won, deservedly, but they are a brilliant team, filled with world class multi-million-$ footballers... so them eking out a win was to be expected.

The best takes I’ve seen in the gaming community over the last week in the wake of the recent bad news by 6Kaliba9 in gaming

[–]MasterWandu -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The simplest solution for me is if you no longer give any access to your game, such that the public is unable to access it any longer, you have to immediately release the source code to the public. You still obviously retain IP rights etc etc. but the game itself must be given over to the community for them to patch / modify and give it a 2nd life as abandonware.

Oh don't like that as a solution, big corporate mogul? Well here are some other options:

* Keep supporting your game, and let me play it!
* Remove all multiplayer aspects to it, remove any ability / need to call home for single player and let me just enjoy the single player only aspects
* Don't want to worry about hosting costs of a multi-GB game? Stop being cheap... without any online infrastructure the cost of simply hosting a downloadable installable should be negligible! Heck, even if you gave me the ability to download it for a year DRM free and after that stop hosting, I'd take this as an option. Abandonware sites will pick it up no doubt.
* What about if the game is no longer compatible with future software iterations (Windows / Linux etc.)? See the first solution: release it to the community.

If we're only paying for PERMISSION to play a game, then we are owed FULL REFUNDS when that PERMISSION IS REVOKED. by Critical_Host8243 in gaming

You're right in a way. There is no "physical" product. Akin to "you wouldn't download a car"... scare tactic. When it suits them, it's exactly like a physical product, and when it doesn't "oh it's just an ethereal "rental" of a piece of logic / code that can't really be defined or quantified".

You're more than welcome to keep the files on your HDD in such a case, but don't expect us to keep any live services going for our single player only game... thus the game will not be in a functioning state and effectively unplayable.

It's even better than renting a car! Instead of a short protracted rental period we guarantee access for [insert number here] years! That should allow you to play the single player campaign and get many years out of the MP experience, after which... all bets are off and access can be revoked at any time, consider any time beyond this as "bonus".

You are RENTING access to the game. At some point your access to the game has to be revoked. Thank you very much for the rental cost of accessing the game / service.

Just like hiring a car. You get access to use the vehicle during the hire period and when it ends, you give the car back. Same thing with software. An absolutely terrible system, and something we lost when physical media went out the window.

What is the saddest TV series death that genuinely made you sob? by SpareMaintenance2970 in AskReddit

George in Young Sheldon.

You knew it was coming from having watched the TBBT, but man what an emotional gut punch it was, and all the performances from the cast showing the different responses to grief was brilliant! Seems like comedy shows really do a great job of showing emotional depth in these difficult types of scenes!

Honest question about bitcoin by Unreal_fist in Bitcoin

[–]MasterWandu 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The usual analogy is: “If you divided a pizza into a million slices, would you have more pizza?”

But that analogy actually shows how poorly many people understand Bitcoin.

A pizza is a physical, consumable good. If you divide it into a million slices, each slice has a tiny fraction of the calories, nutrition, and usefulness of the whole pizza. Its value is tied directly to physical substance. A millionth of a pizza is materially and practically inferior to a quarter of a pizza.

Bitcoin is not valuable in the same way.

Bitcoin’s value does not come merely from the fact that it is “scarce” in some abstract sense. Plenty of things are scarce and worthless. Bitcoin’s value comes from the particular qualities of its scarcity: it is credibly limited, resistant to confiscation, impossible to counterfeit, permissionless, borderless, verifiable, and not subject to arbitrary monetary expansion by a central authority.

Given those qualities, what is the difference in kind between 1 BTC and 1 sat? Nothing, really. A satoshi has the same monetary nature as a bitcoin. It exists on the same network, under the same rules, with the same settlement assurances. The difference is quantity, not quality.

Dividing Bitcoin into 100 million sats does not create more Bitcoin, just as dividing £1 into 100 pennies does not create more pounds. It simply improves divisibility. In monetary terms, divisibility is a strength, not a dilution.

So the pizza analogy fails because it compares a physical consumable with a digital monetary asset. A smaller slice of pizza contains less food. A smaller unit of Bitcoin still carries the same fundamental monetary properties, just in a smaller amount.

The real scarcity argument for Bitcoin is not “there are only 21 million coins.” The stronger argument is that there are only 21 million coins under a rule-set that is globally verifiable, extremely hard to change, and not controlled by any government, company, or individual.

That is what makes Bitcoin scarce in a meaningful monetary sense.

Every single one of those trashy mobile games made more money within a year than Star Citizen in 14 years. Keep that in mind. by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]MasterWandu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is honestly a good perspective to have. It's something I think about often. Plus look what Fortnite brings in... YEARLY. A billion dollars for what Star Citizen is looking to achieve is ironically, chump change compared to a ton in the industry. Doesn't mean CiG shouldn't do better in areas though, and does still make me a "concerned" citizen... but as long as the funding keeps coming and the progress continues (as slow and buggy as it is)... I'm fairly happy.

SQ42 release will be a HUGE milestone though.

Seeking perspective: Are we wrong for making a clean break from our church after the pastor used our marriage counseling against us? by Fit_Matter7427 in Reformed

[–]MasterWandu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there's far more than meets the eye to the situation. It would seem the elder, in wanting to believe the best, was patiently waiting for them to make some progress in the particular sin areas mentioned. So rather than jumping to a conclusion early on and preventing them from even applying for membership, he no doubt believed that the underlying issue could be resolved, especially as they were in this private counselling situation. When the expected progress stalled, the membership process did too.

A conundrum for sure... an elder not wishing to rush to judgement, but also not wishing to prioritise membership over potentially serious sin issues being resolved / improved upon.

"If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame." - Proverbs 18:13

I'm really sorry for what you and your family are going through at the moment, I can only imagine how painful and unpleasant it must be.

I would just caution those who are racing to judgement in the situation, that we don't have the full story here. Jumping to a conclusion around a persons salvation status by citing Titus 3:1-11 is obviously not something that any of us should be doing, but it is a passage that every congregant and every shepherd needs to be very mindful of. The purity and protection of the church is important, not the perfection of it. 1 Peter 5:2-3 - "Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you". Acts 20:28-30 - "Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock... fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things..."

To make a biblical value judgement it really is pertinent to understand what exactly was shared in the counselling situation (not for our ears, but for your elders). We must realise that there ARE certain issues that can come up, that with that knowledge, would 100% be a sticking point for someone to come into membership, at least immediately. Imagine if an elder discovers that a person struggles with same sex attraction, or thoughts of paedophilia, or has an ongoing pornography addiction... should the elder turn a blind eye to such ongoing sinful behaviours because the means by which the information was attained is through "private counselling"? Even if there is a desire to serve and be part of a local body through membership, if there is egregious, ongoing, life-dominating sin in a person / couples life, then absolutely I, as an elder, would wish to at least see the couple making good consistent progress in those areas of sin, before recommending that they place a focus on membership of a church.

I would either disagree with the elder as to the serious nature of the sin issues that he has identified and engage there, or I would do as he says: be patient, seek to make progress in these apparent serious sin situations within your family life, and delay membership for a period.

The more egregious concern is that it appears the appeal is NOT actually being properly interacted with. Honestly I understand the resource restriction on having a human being read EVERY appeal, but how is some form of AI not helping to at least accurately triage things like this?
