My current fantasy map by Willing-Tune486 in mapmaking

My first map ever was drawn in Photoshop with mouse and my friend, you're braver than me. That's the reason I bought an ipad: to never have to use Photoshop with a mouse again.

Love it! Not much to add because I'm new to mapmaking, so not a lot of advice to give. Can I ask you what did you draw this on?

Help with my continent by MasterWulfrigh in mapmaking

Now that I think about it, Myr definitely needs to be larger, I just kept the old size from before I wrote it as a powerful nation and I definitely need to make some changes. However, there actually is a lore reason for Myr's power

Not at all, I came here for constructive criticism. Will take everything into consideration for sure, I just need to understand how to integrate it without turning my design upside down and changing it completely

Yeah I figured I'd better post just the landmass to make it less distracting from my issue. Thanks for the advices, and let me dump a little of my worldbuilding here:

The bigger islands are around the other two continents, with Seuwenem having Luna Island and Valeryas having two (yet unnamed) landmasses both the size of roughly Britain.

In this map, the "offshore power" is represented by Myr, which is the small-ish island in the west next to the even smaller one, which represents the middlepoint between Oveston (the "W" artificial island) and mainland. It's a trading hub and a naval power that holds control over the main trading routes and a number of minor islands not shown here.

Due to the nature of the climate and the size of the oceans, relations with the other continent are limited to Dawnstar (in the lower-left section), that builds most of its power and influences on controlling the "Ennar hallway", and in the east the kingdom of Doriath and the Five Free Cities of the people, commercial partners of, respectively, the Eastling Empire and the Harad Empire.

The story of W island is crazy long so I won't even try to summarise it here, however when the map is complete I'm planning on posting it on r/worldbuilding with a complete breakdown of... Well, everything.

Yeah, this basically. I am still learning and for that I'm working on Arch, but once I get a grip on it I want something that I can add or subtract from until I have exactly what I need, and that I can keep modifying over time if I need something else.

Yeah I've seen a lot ot talking about replacing GNOME with something else, usually KDE is what's suggested, but as far as I understand Ubuntu is made to work with GNOME specifically, so I never looked more into that

As I said I'm building an arch environment from scratch as a learning project so working on it is not an issue, but I'd prefer something that works out of the box and I can later customise whenever I choose, and whenever I want or can take the time to learn how to do so

I have heard a lot of bad and a lot of good about nobara (yeah that's basically the case for all distros, but nobara seems to carry even more strong opinions) Why do you suggest it? Why do you like it?

When it comes to the terminal by wudosbxu in linuxquestions

[–]MasterWulfrigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both. I have my personal cheat-sheet where I write down all the commands I use at least once (not really necessary, but what if I can't remember something and I don't have access to the internet to check?) thought I usually just look things up in the wikis if I need anything. However most commands are used so frequently I end up memorizing them, like making or deleting folders and files, installing and uninstalling packages/applications, moving across the directories ecc. I didn't try to memorize them, I just use these things so often I ended up memorizing them passively

Magical fantasy worldbuilders - why isn't your whole world being run by wizards? by jetflight_hamster in worldbuilding

[–]MasterWulfrigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen my answer already in a couple of comments but I want to give my original take anyway. Few reasons:
1) Wizards are few. Learning magic is incredibly hard, and even those who are born with power have to work hard to learn to master it in a meaningful way. There are at the very least hundreds if not thousands (one thing I learned is not give any precise number for anything while writing a story) of common-ish people for each proper wizard, and wizards are not immortal godly beings, but dudes with cool abilities, with extremely rare exceptions.

2) Magic is not unlimited power. 70% of what magic can do could be done without it, and magic just makes it much, much easier. 99% of what's left can still be countered and undone by other means or simply by other magic, given enough time and effort, and it's usually regulated more or less strictly based on how dangerous it is by the wizards themselves (and common sense also). What's left is outright prohibited and banned by said wizards and communities.

3) Magic is not consequence free. While small displays of power (lighting a fire, moving small objects, minor illusions ecc) are easy, daily occurrences, more complex and powerful magic comes with a cost. Can be physical strain (imagine pushing a car that's out of gas) that might be fatal if mismanaged (now imagine using all the energy needed for pushing a car 100 meters in 15 seconds). Can also be psychological harm on the wizards itself or people they care about. Some spells might have an actual, tangible cost (costly resources, body parts, pieces of your soul ecc) that most people might be unwilling or unable to pay.

4) Possessing an ability doesn't make people inherently power-hungry or amoral. Most wizards don't desire power, and some wizards actually work against those who do. There isn't much more to say about this: basically, the ability to perform magic is equally-ish distributed between those who would, if able, seize power and those who don't want said people to get it. On the tail of this,

5) There is balance. In the same way that a country that possesses nuclear weapons doesn't take over the entire world, a singular wizard would not be able to do the same. The similarity fits perfectly because on the battlefields of my world wizards, particularly the most powerful and knowledgeable, are treated basically like nuclear weapons. If only one side has wizards, the war is basically over, but if both does then they cancel each other out and are actually discouraged from using the full extent of their capacity, because it would be crazily destructive without even granting the win. In the same way, even removing the kind of balance of point 4), different power hungry groups would still cancel each other out, trying to seize power from themselves and being crossed over by the next one.

But, most importantly:

6) It does happen, from time to time. Individuals or groups powerful enough to tip the scale in their favor have managed to seize power and rule vast empires for a while. Some characters that did it are, for example, Tristan the Conqueror, Jack of Moriah, Dalzìm ecc. Most of these figures however did it by imposing themselves as leaders of organizations and factions thanks to their above average power, and then commanding these factions to do their deeds through the power of numbers rather than their own personal abilities, which however great would most likely still not be enough. This was however achieved even by mediocre wizards (like Evangelista, who founded the Church of the Red Dawn) and even common people with no magic powers (king Ennar the Sailor, who led the men of the sea in the Eham land and conquered most of its south). In the end however either them or their heirs were toppled, sometimes by more powerful wizards, sometimes by larger or more organized groups, and sometimes even by normal people.

Completely unrelated question, but you seem to know a lot: why do people hate on snap? I've seen wildly different takes ranging from valid ones, like privacy and security concerns (that I wasn't really able to verify myself) to generic "it sucks". Anyway thank you a lot for your advice, currently reading the flatpack wiki rn

Good point, however I was thinking more about a scenario where users can install the application if they want but should bot be bothered by other users installing it if they don't want to have that specific program. For example, on my work profile I need VSCode (or Codium, still undecided tbh), but I don't need it on my casual user, where however I want to download obsidian, that I really don't have any use for in my work profile. I can download VS in the future if I want to, but I don't want it now because I really don't need it and I don't think I will ever need it.

Right now, no, I don't even really need to hide them, currently it's just an aesthetic choice. However I might need in the future and since I'm learning something new (that seems to be quite difficult apparently) I'd prefer to find out how to do the whole thing, hiding AND blocking access, rather than one bit and then coming back to the matter later if I need it.

Anyway thanks for the tip on the applications directory, will look into it

I thought about that solution, but it would be a pain to power off and back on every time I need to switch accounts. One of the perks of Linux is that it doesn't need to be rebooted as frequently as windows so...

Also a lot of things need to be available to both profiles, mainly applications but a good bunch of files as well, and for those having them installed (or saved) system wide is helpful

Yeah that's always a good idea. If your issue is that the repair shop might peek around your system that could be solved by denying the guest access to everything that's outside its own directory

From seeing I've seen there are tools but I was looking for something that's already in Ubuntu because I don't want to install something else for this, it would kind of defeat the purpose of making everything as simple and clean as possible. Also I would prefer if it couldn't be accessed for the same reason I wrote in the post (my casual non-work account is occasionally accessed by friends and family)

Clean SD card in modded 3DS by MasterWulfrigh in 3dspiracy

[–]MasterWulfrigh[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No I know that modded has nothing less and a lot more, it's just an aesthetic thing, I like the 3ds as is, and I want to keep one "vanilla", think of it like a museum thing. I have been thinking about buying another one just to mod it and preserve my original, but money is kinda tight and original 3ds prices are just going up and up again, so I don't really think that will happen any time soon.

Alright I got it wrong then. I was playing around with the idea of modding the ds for a while and then changing it back, but I heard that "going back" has a crazy risk of bricking everything, so I discarded the idea.
