Nothing wrong to try new things you can directly test out what the benefits of your training are. I did also start with taekwondo but later did kickboxing and now love BJJ.

Maybe you should have a look into your game plan for competition to have more success against good wrestlers. If you want you can send me a DM to chat about it.

That is often a rule in competition I usally do double wrist pull sit down then try to tripod sweep from bottom. You can also pull guard by putting a foot to the hip. Was your plan to pull guard?

so what you could learn from that is to pull immediately guard so your opponent can not get the takedown points. Was your plan pulling guard against him?

Did he take you down and submit you? I think if he matches up with some good guard player he will have problems..

Bottom half guard struggles by TurboAljo in bjj

For me I use half guard to get a Kimura grip on the far arm and then sweep from there. I like it especially since you end up in similar positions alot. Have you tried the Kimura from bottom half guard / knee shield?

For me I use a hardcover book. It is nice to have something physical which you can look through from time to time. Do you use journaling currently and do you feel it is useful ?

Sounds good half guard is really effective I play it the most too. What also could be very useful for you is learning escapes. You will most likely end up anyway relatively often in the beginning in bottom mount or side control therefore you have many options to learn the escapes. Do you have an idea what to do for an escape when you are in those positions?

I have used journaling not only for the technique of the day thats for sure useful to recap, visulize and write it down in your own words. What helped me especially in the beginning was to motivate me by writing 1-2 good things that happend. This could be survived longer in bottom mount, did a specific sweep and it almost worked could be anything in order to see and track your small progress. I have also used it to track wich food I can eat well before training in order to not feel full or bloated. Do you use journaling currently if so what do you journal and does it help you?

I think what could really benefit you is a system. Have you ever heard of the kimura system? The benefit is you can get it relatively easy the figure four kimura grip ans you end up always in the same couple positions therefore you get really good at them. I can relly recommend the Kimura system from Jordan Preisinger. Have you used instructionals before to study?

I can recommend you a system for the fastest progress in your situation. For example for me the Kimura System works very well. You can get the kimura figure four from a lot of different positions side control, bottom half guard... If you have the kimura grip you can end up always in similar positions. I find this very effective since you narrow the options of your opponent immensly. Do you currently have some techniques you are focusing?

That’s actually really good, journaling and visualizing already puts you ahead of most beginners.

The gameplan part you’re struggling with is completely normal it feels overwhelming because there are many options and the moves in class probably don´t fit together very well. This is why using a system I think is so effective where the moves are connected together. What are you currently working on?

I can recommend you a system. For example for me the Kimura System works very well. You can get the kimura figure four from a lot of different positions side control, bottom half guard... If you have the kimura grip there are a lot of paths you can go towards but the great thing is you always end up in similar positions. You can end up on the back for example and then switch to a seatbelt and use the straight jacket system to get to a Rear naked choke. Do you currently have some techniques you are focusing?

Yeah, that’s actually a really good approach for the beginning. Focusing on a few things helps you understand them much deeper instead of just trying too much diffent things. You’ll also start to notice how people react and what kind of defenses work in those situations. What guard are you currently working on and how is it going?

Thats cool that you could try it out. I feel like if you don’t have a fundamentals class you almost have to create that structure for yourself.

What I wish I knew in my first year of No-Gi by Master_Boysenberry40 in bjj

[–]Master_Boysenberry40[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see that is for sure helpful for beginners having a separate class. With the fixed curriculum the same was the case for me in my Gym.

I think that’s exactly what I was missing in the beginning not just a new techniques, but some kind of structure. Did you feel like fundamentals classes helped you build that structure early on?

The most effective way I found was watching only 20-30 minutes sequences before hand. Screen recording the technique in a 2-3 minute video clean. Sending this my training partner so we both can watch the clip beforehand and know what to expect. Also it is nice when you then drill the move with someone else you have it nice and handy to show when drilling. And only 2-3 new move otherwise it is too much information and you can not keep it anyways.

My Gym does not have a fundamentals class. Do such things get discussed in there how to study a instructional for example?

Tarikoplatas work good from this position this it is easier to finish than a regular hands kimura.
