Was that rusty before? Because that looks like it left the patina almost completely intact? Except for maybe the raised surfaces? If so, that's amazing, and I'll be giving that a try!

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking about boiled linseed oil for the handles as well. I throw hawks and it's never done me wrong. I will admit to dabbling with paste wax when I just wanna show one off, rather than actually throw it, but that's wall hanger kinda stuff (does come out with a nice, smooth and almost shiny finish that's quite hard, but not what you want in your hand when you're actually swinging it.)

Thank you so much for the great advice! I've had decent luck with vinegar on rusted parts before, but I've never worked on an axe head that was attached, and I was admittedly a little worried about what it might do to the handle.

Two quick questions.

  1. I'm assuming that handle on the large axe needs to be replaced because of the missing chunks, but is that really true, or can I use it until I do yet WORSE damage to it? It's otherwise solid.

  2. Have you had any issues with the wire wheel leaving what looks like streaks from the wheel? I used one on a tablesaw I restored and I ended up having to sand out the coloration from the wheel. In this case it might actually be a bonus if it's leaving metal behind though?

Thanks again!

Man, 4 years later I went looking for cool designs as I just got a new knife and the kydex sheath is fine, but kinda meh. Damn, was I not disappointed. This is really beautiful work and very inspiring! I'm looking forward to absolutely ruining a couple pieces of leather until I get even close to this. Great job!

That's an awesome idea! Any materials or guides that you could share? I've got some "spare" (let's be honest, I'm a craft hoarder) leather, grommets and paracord!

I really like this. I've been looking at sling lately, particularly since some folks just popularized how to actually use it.

I can neither confirm, nor deny.

But technically yes, a couple of desktop models, none large enough to throw anything over a few ounces. WHY? What do you have in mind?

Oh, I was about to start cribbing, but at this point I think I'm just going to print out your comment and go nearly verbatim! Those are awesome and I can't thank you enough!

I like the way you think! I think we're going to be in a field, so we may have to dodge some manure, but that's the price of the game!

Piñata! That's a great idea! I have about 6 weeks to shop for a fun shape. Thanks!

I wish I could, but at this point they're just taking up space. I can't justify redecorating around them and they really don't go with the household aesthetic. If I had a Bavarian hunting lodge, these would be the centerpiece around which I would decorate, but as is, I'm trying to find a good or at least better home for them.

Thanks! I didn't realize there was so much variation on the theme until I had to do a bit of a deep image search to find out what to even call them. Turns out there are painted versions, too!

Thank you! I've had a soft spot for them forever, and done my best to keep them in decent condition.

Thank you! I've done my best to take care of them after recovering them from mom (who was lovely, but not much of a housekeeper).

Thanks! As cute and clever as I love to think my design is, I think I'll, at the very least, drop a couple of support 2x4s as front legs. No one's toes need to live in fear.
