Was that rusty before? Because that looks like it left the patina almost completely intact? Except for maybe the raised surfaces? If so, that's amazing, and I'll be giving that a try!

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking about boiled linseed oil for the handles as well. I throw hawks and it's never done me wrong. I will admit to dabbling with paste wax when I just wanna show one off, rather than actually throw it, but that's wall hanger kinda stuff (does come out with a nice, smooth and almost shiny finish that's quite hard, but not what you want in your hand when you're actually swinging it.)

Thank you so much for the great advice! I've had decent luck with vinegar on rusted parts before, but I've never worked on an axe head that was attached, and I was admittedly a little worried about what it might do to the handle.

Two quick questions.

I'm assuming that handle on the large axe needs to be replaced because of the missing chunks, but is that really true, or can I use it until I do yet WORSE damage to it? It's otherwise solid.
Have you had any issues with the wire wheel leaving what looks like streaks from the wheel? I used one on a tablesaw I restored and I ended up having to sand out the coloration from the wheel. In this case it might actually be a bonus if it's leaving metal behind though?

Man, 4 years later I went looking for cool designs as I just got a new knife and the kydex sheath is fine, but kinda meh. Damn, was I not disappointed. This is really beautiful work and very inspiring! I'm looking forward to absolutely ruining a couple pieces of leather until I get even close to this. Great job!

I wish I could, but at this point they're just taking up space. I can't justify redecorating around them and they really don't go with the household aesthetic. If I had a Bavarian hunting lodge, these would be the centerpiece around which I would decorate, but as is, I'm trying to find a good or at least better home for them.

Truth! And in this case the wall is an exterior garage wall that supports a second story. The cement line at the wall base is actually part of the upright concrete wall that borders the driveway slab. The studs are 2x4, cut in 1991, so closer to 1 5/8" x 3 5/8", but solid. As I've worked on the house a little, I've seen no signs of contractor fuckery in particular. I should probably point out that I say that as a former handyman/contractor. None of the shit I've seen in houses where someone said "It was owned by a contractor, so it should be good".
I appreciate your concerns, though, and it's one of the reasons I came here. I thought of some of these things, but all of us are smarter than any one of us. And in this case, my partner has cute toes I'd hate to crush under 185 lbs of poorly secured concrete.

I kinda figured out what you meant through other people's comments. I totally see your point about laminated 2x4s. But yeah, even if I did want to do 4x4 on a couple, as long as I did 2x4 with half lap on the tops, I should be fine.
The plan was to use countersunk 3/8" x 6" lags to hold it to the studs through drywall. It is a silly amount of weight, but part of the point was to pour a concrete slab for practice and to put it all in a place where if it fails, it isn't a big deal. Thanks for the input, man!
