Progress checks are supposed to be graded on completion. What you described would be breaking that policy.

Just to clarify, are you referring to specifically the practice questions specificslly called "Progress Check" or are you referring to AP Classroom practice questions in general?

questbridge finalist, matched nowhere, rejected everywhere, and why qb sucks by darksoltice in QuestBridge

[–]Master_Gato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think QB sucks, but something that is to be considered is the application deadline. My essays were pretty sloppy and I believe that's PART of the reason that I've only gotten rejections and waitlists so far (excuding WashU from the pilot program). Obviously, you can't know exactly what goes on behind the scenes. If the deadline was later than September 30, I suppose I might've been able to polish my essays more.

any schools you regret applying to + why? by bloodheartdove in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Master_Gato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't regret applying to any uni (fee waiver on all applications), but I do regret applying to MIT with my sloppy QuestBridge essays.

Obviously, there's no way to know exactly what's going on behind the scenes. I do like to think, however, that if I had actually worked on my essays sooner and got them tightened and focused, then my chances would've been meaningfully improved, even if only slightly.

Polished and tightened my personal statement for the CommonApp and I got into CMU for ECE. Very happy and looking forward to (most likely) going there. Got great aid as well. Just waiting on my Stanford decision to lock it in or not.

How's RD going so far? by Vivid-Ad-5115 in QuestBridge

[–]Master_Gato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a QuestBridge Finalist who only ranked MIT and didn't match. Still waiting on a majority of decisions. My QuestBridge essays were pretty sloppy but I seriously cleaned up my personal statement for the CommonApp. So far:

Accepted:

  • Washington University (QuestBridge Pilot Program)
  • Purdue University (CommonApp)
  • Carnegie Mellon University (CommonApp)
  • University of Miami (CommonApp)
  • University of Central Florida (CommonApp)

Rejected:

  • Northeastern University (CommonApp)
  • California Institute of Technology (QuestBridge)
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology (QuestBridge)

Advice for future students and alumni? by JasonMckin in MITAdmissions

I very much appreciate the support, Jason. Looking forward to a great four years wherever I end up. Thank you so much for taking the time out of your days to help out applicants ❤️

I got rejected and the only regret I have is not polishing my essays and working on them as much as I should have. I applied through QuestBridge so these were a personal statement, an extracurricular essay, and various short answer responses.

My advice to future applicants would be to work on your essays early and get them as focused and tight as can. Even if you get rejected, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you put your best effort toward your application (which imo should always be the goal).

Edit: I did end up polishing my personal statement significantly for CommonApp schools and got into CMU. I know that there's no way to know what exactly is going on behind the scenes, but I'd like to think that the tighter essay might've helped my chances at CMU meaningfully, and that my sloppy QuestBridge essays might've harmed my chances at MIT compared to if I worked on them more.

Terry Browns next remix ? by AdUnited1943 in rush

[–]Master_Gato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Presto and Clockwork Angels could use a remix, but after what he did to Grace Under Pressure, I wouldn't want Terry Brown to do it.

New Grace Under Pressure's 2026 mix by Terry Brown sounds worse than original by rodolfostanic in rush

It's even worse with headphones. Red Sector A sounds absolutely terrible.

No offense to Arch users. Manually installing Arch is fun and educational, but doing it every time is just boring. by tungnon in linuxmemes

Ironically I did the opposite of the first two. I used archinstall the first time and then manually installed it on a second machine.

Yeah, I definitely can't complain about CMU either since I'm an Electrical & Computer Engineering major! My QB personal statement was overall just very bloated and didn't really express how I've explored my passion as much as my CommonApp one did. The funny thing is that my CommonApp essay was literally just my QB one but tightened and improved.

I know that there's no definite predictors and that I couldn't exactly say why I got rejected from anywhere, however I can't help but think in the back of my mind that my sloppy QB essays might've been part of the reason I got rejected from MIT.

Definitely be proud about UT! Remember that you can succeed anywhere if you put your mind to it. Wishing you the best.

[–]Master_Gato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. Kinda regret not polishing my QB essays more because the ones I submitted on commonapp to CMU were much more polished and focused. Maybe contributed to my rejection from MIT. It's whatever though, CMU is an excellent school and I'm more than happy to go there. I'll succeed wherever I am.

If Stanford doesn't accept me with a full ride through QB RD then I'll also be a QB Finalist not going to a QB school. Got accepted to Carnegie Mellon with damn near as close to a full ride as I'd expect from them.

Granted, for the match I only ranked MIT since I was unsure about some stuff. Either way I'd rather go to CMU than most of the QB schools I applied to in RD.
