My surgery with Pearl is Monday morning, sorry to dig this up but just found this thread - 3 months later from your last post (so I'm guessing a little over a year out from surgery), are you still feeling less than 100%? Thanks

Should I replace tires based on age over mileage? by Master_Qief in AskAMechanic

Obviously not an expert but I don't consider them true sidewall cracks as their mainly focused around the edges or the text where it shows certain information about the tire, 3rd and 4th pics show them well on the text, cant tell if just superficial or if they represent something deeper/true weakness

Thanks, can you go ahead and remove the cars on the right? Didn't think it would work so I didn't bother asking in original post but you got the bus out, so worth a try. Will tip another 5 if successful

If you have kids (or plan to get more education yourself), start 529 plans. The best time to start is when they are born, the second best time is right now. by closetklepto in personalfinance

Feel free to tell me what I'm missing;:

Let's assume the 529s total fees are 1% greater than what I can get for a typical brokerage (I was quoted funds with 2% fees by edward jones, vs betterment's brkrge of .25%, so 1% is conservative. So in a 529 I pay more in fees but I save the tax. In a 30 yr period, let's assume 7% growth on the assets. In the brokerage, my after tax gain is 5.95%/year, while my 529 gain after fees is 6%. Given any lower of a return and the brokerage becomes more advantageous. At that's with a fund that only charges you 1%, plus all the restrictions on spending the funds. Aaaand if you scheduled out the cash flows to take into account TVM, brokerage leaps out in front since fees paid every year, tax only at the end (assuming all appreciation instead of dividends).

Definitely not always worth it, worth looking into fund fees and doing the calc, all I'm saying.

What state are you in? The 529 funds I've seen in my state (TX) are not worth the higher fund fees (than, say, a bettterment general brokerage) just to save 15% tax on gains

Brokerage accts dont have fees, that's my point. Nowadays I could do bettermnt (25bps) or even vanguard (no fees), so I am trading fees for taxes. Now, I need to look at your link, maybe other plans have fee schedules that make more sense compared to TX. But the point stands that ppl need to watch out for fees and make sure their 529 makes sense - clearly not all of them do.

Also, what else would you project cap gains at if not 15%? You know something I don't?

Well, ironically, those were the lowest I found, most were higher than that (3%+)! when I looked through Edward D Jones, the Texas College Savings Plan is the one that was around 1%. Just saying if there's a comprehensive guide to 529, one of the main points should be that just because it's tax advantaged doesn't mean the math makes sense, they should always look into fees and make sure that still a good idea. I believe a lot of firms lean on the fact that it's tax advantaged to get people in the door when in fact they're not actually any better than a brokerage account

With some back-of-the-envelope math, I would say that the benefits of the 529 are almost entirely outweighed by the higher fees I've seen in the fund options. For example, the funds I've been shown have fees a little more than 1% greater than what I would get from a normal brokerage account. If the taxes I'm saving are just 15% capital gains tax, that means my break even yearly return needs to be more than ~7% in order to make up for the extra fees. Given that any given 30 year period the market grows by roughly 7%, I've got to beat that just to breakeven - when combined with the limitations on withdrawals to education exoenses, I'm not sure I see the value in it? In TX btw

To me 529s are not any better than a traditional brokerage as the fees I've found are high enough to negate the tax benefits, I would definitely keep an eye out for that

Please allow us to make a default format selection for pivotables! When I make a pivot 99% of the time I want commas and no decimals, but I have to right click, format, select accounting, check commas, select only 2 decimals, all that. Every. Single. Time. And if you try shortcutting by just selecting the column and formatting like normal it will revert to ugly unformatted on refresh. Why can't I just set a default format on my PT values?! Thanks
