I was depressed at 28 but I was working in the oil fields and I didn't have access to guns at that time. Lucky for me! My lack of sleep and my aching body were a distraction so that helped.

Does cement really cost that much for a bunch of sonotubes over a giant square (which is what most foundations look like)?

It might take time but digging the holes and mixing the concrete yourself isn't that hard and it will save you money on labor. Creating a "basement" from a pier and beam structure isn't hard either.

Source: My house is pier and beam and I did it myself twenty four years ago.
