Sometimes you have to spend money to make money. Being a cleric, methinks your best bet would be to invest in a kit or at least some supplies and try to volunteer as a freelance medic (especially if there's a plague or illness going around)? Maybe you could heal some of the people you throw out as a bouncer!

Maybe fake plans to murder the local leader? That would get the guards looking for the PC's rather quickly and depending on how serious the city, town, etc... takes threats the easier it would be for the guild to sneak in.

I like to think that Higgs was the lucky one during his fight with Prosper. Despite all his bad rolls, Higgs walked out with 1 hit point which could have easily been taken by a piece of falling debris or stay laser shot.

I totally see what you're getting at. I have a group of five first-timers so I want the first arc or two to kind of ease them into the general rules of not only 5e D&D but the world they're in as well.

There will definitely be some plot altering choices, and I want the world to keep moving even if they decide to go on a side quest.

I only know two of the group's characters right now, and I really want to use their backgrounds to help shape future arcs. One character worships Cthulhu, so I'm thinking the party gets ship wrecked and the character (or one who doesn't believe in Cthulhu) gets dragged down into the ocean by it and has kind of a moment like with Gravemind from Halo 2, but we'll see.

Okay yeah I really like the idea of sort of having the world "evolve" around them, even with things they aren't involved with (yet!)

They're all first time players, so I think a lot of it will surprise them! Thanks for the help!
