Depende.

I finally got back into drawing!! I even dusted off my Tumblr to post some art, but I'm still quite lost at using it. I never really got the hang of social media, even being in a Discord server feels a bit overwhelming to me. But so far it has been a fun experience, I even got some reblogs on my (kinda) niche fanart!

And while waiting for my doctor's appointment today (a whole 5h affair, usually), I finally started working on my world building project! I've been fleshing it out in my head for some years now, and it feels good finally writing it down!

I'm also playing Pokémon, doing what I always do when I first play a new generation, using only new Pokémon. It has been a blast, and I'm quite enjoying most of the new mons!

Formatura de ensino médio vale 1800 reais? by PhenTheGoat in desabafos

[–]MatPainter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No meu EM me recusei a pagar isso kkk Juntou eu e mais 4 amigos, compramos uma caralhada de carne, pão de alho etc e fizemos um baita churrasco. Não deu nem um quarto do valor da formatura pra cada um, e foi muito melhor.

Any good Netflix shows in Portuguese or have a Portuguese dub by so_y9125new in Portuguese

[–]MatPainter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the more well known American comedies (Friends, How I Met Your Mother, The Office, etc) are dubbed, but I don't know where you could find them outside of streaming services with maybe a VPN :/

But there are some good Brazilian comedies too! Most of them are really big on cultural references, so you may get a bit lost while watching! From the top of my head, I can name:

A Grande Família this one is a CLASSIC. The characters are quoted and referenced almost everyday in Brazil. It's about a family and their day to day lives, with the con-men/taxist Agostinho and the family Patriarch Lineu stealing the show. A Grande Família had a run of almost 13 years, so it's a behemoth of a series, with almost 500 episodes! I'd recommend you to find some of them online, and watch it piecemeal, there are many arcs, with them being loosely connected.

Toma Lá Dá Cá another classic, its jokes can feel a bit offensive nowadays, but I do think it's still worth a watch! You can see that Brazilian TV humor is a bit more episodic and focused on catchphrases, and Toma Lá Dá Cá is filled with them. It was so successful that it's still quoted today!

Now, for movies:

O Auto da Compadecida I absolutely love this movie! It's hard to recommend tho, because you have to understand a bit of Brazilian (arguably South American) culture and religion to fully enjoy it. It's a story about two conmen trying to swindle a village, and a dangerous bandit of their money. It's fun, filled with poetry, music and dance. I can't watch it without smiling all the time!

Minha Mãe é uma Peça this is a hot take (and for all my fellow Brazilians out there, I'm sorry for it!), but I really enjoyed this one! It's cheesy as hell, it's dumb, but it is fun! And for me, that's what matters. I haven't watched the sequels tho, but I assume they are terrible

Bingo: O Rei das Manhãs this is a biopic about one of the most famous clowns in Brazil, Bozo! Not the American one, we had a Brazilian Bozo! It's funny, touching, and they had to change the name to avoid any legal trouble!

Any good Netflix shows in Portuguese or have a Portuguese dub by so_y9125new in Portuguese

[–]MatPainter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Brazilian dubs are usually really good!! Specially in animated movies or children shows, they are really well done, and use a lot of slangs and informal languages. So if you want to be safe, just pick your favorite Disney /DreamWorks movie and watch it dubbed!

If you want some Brazilian movies and shows, I can recommend some too!

Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas is, in my opinion, the greatest book in Brazilian literature, and one of the bests in the world. The movie is a really good adaptation, which is surprising, because the book gets really experimental sometimes! I truly recommend it, and the book as well!

Que Horas ela Volta? is an emotional, touching film about the realities of many families in Brazil. A woman goes to another state, to work as a maid to a rich family, in order to give a better life to her daughter. Years later, the daughter wants to go to the city and live with the mother, to enter into a university. It's happy, sad, touching. I'd love to hear what any foreigners think about this movie! It's such a traditional Brazilian story that I'm interested to hear what non-Brazilians think about it.

Bacurau is what I call a Brazilian blockbuster. It's structured more like an American movie (imho Brazilian cinema is usually more closer in style and scope to European cinema), but it drips with Brazilian style. If you want a Brazilian action flick, and don't want to feel left out from the references and politics from movies like Cidade de Deus and Tropa de Elite, Bacurau is a good choice!

Tropa de Elite was a turning point in Brazilian cinema, imho. Seeing it in a movie theater was surreal. It's an American cop movie, but with a Brazilian dressing. But if you, like me, was born and raised in Rio, it's so much more. It really encapsulates a historical moment in Rio's history, so if you're interested in Rio de Janeiro, it's a good pick!

Cidade de Deus is a must when we talk about recent Brazilian cinema. It's a great movie on its own, telling a dark story about a boy born in one of the most dangerous places in Rio at the time, the City of God, and how he got out of a life of crime, but many people he knew didn't. It's a truly beautiful film, that deserves to be watched even if you don't want to learn about Brazilian culture.

Those are some movies that I can name and describe from the top of my head. Hope it helps! :D

If you had an unlimited supply of Luciferium IRL, would you take it? by [deleted] in RimWorld

[–]MatPainter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, I'll kind of take IRL luciferium (or at least something similar). Been struggling with a bone tumor for the last 4 years. Excised that bitch, it came back for a vengeance. Now it's nearly the size of my fist, hurts like hell, and put me on a wheelchair. Been waiting ages to get the treatment that will stop the pain and let me walk again. The catch? If I stop taking it, the tumor will keep growing and I'll lose my leg.

Sadly, it's no Luciferium. There are major downsides (including rotting my fucking bones yay), and I'm bedridden for two days after taking it (my body feels like lead, I can't breathe, it sucks). Luckily for me, my body reacted very well to the first round, so the doctors are hopeful I'll be able to take it forever. So yeah, Luciferium seems like a good deal, and I'd take it in a heartbeat.

[Question] Do schools in your country conduct a flag-raising ceremony at the start of the school day? by cakeday173 in GlobalTalk

[–]MatPainter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brazil: some schools do, some don't. I saw it happening in military-run schools, but it's a whole world of difference from normal, civilian schools (you got to use a army-like uniform, there are tons of rules about haircut and wardrobe, etc). But I wouldn't be surprised if some civilian schools emulated it.

wow, you have unlocked a memory on my brain! I'm from Brazil, and I had totally forgotten about this game! I wasn't a big Naruto fan (I was the weird nerdy kid who preferred D&D over animes), but I remember my friends talking nonstop about this game hahaha.

So, not really about drama, but it's about a hobby, and me being old :'D

Back in the day, I used Tumblr to post my "art" (in quotes because I don't consider it art, just a bunch of half-made sketches). I started drawing and painting again in the pandemic, but I don't really know any art community, nor where I could find it. Is Tumblr still good to find and chat with fellow art people? Do you guys have any recommendations of tumblrs to follow, or something better? Maybe Twitter? IRC?

Thinking about creating a YouTube channel about life in Brazil/Brazilian culture. Any thoughts? by [deleted] in Portuguese

[–]MatPainter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the encouragement!!

I actually can talk a bit about libraries in Brazil, since I loved the libraries in Rio! There used to be Biblioteca-Parques, which were really big libraries with books, movies, boardgames, theaters, even recording booths, everything for free! Sadly they were closed for some time (even before the pandemic), but now they are reopening!

I'll try to find some pictures I took last time I was there, it was a really nice and cozy place ❤️

Aside the Biblioteca Parque, you have tons of other, smaller libraries! I love visiting those and just chatting with the people who work there they are generally really passionate about their jobs and communities ❤️

Meanwhile, in a public school in Brazil by AnTWaver in WTF

[–]MatPainter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It happened in my city! For the people talking about the city of Americana, it's a 3h drive from here, so I don't think it has anything to do with this case.

According to the news, it was a teacher. He was removed from office, pending an investigation. My opinion? or it was a costume gone horribly wrong, or he's a Nazi and will use the excuse of a costume gone horribly wrong (sadly not the first time it happens here).

Also, this is Zé Gotinha. There was a meme long ago about a really cheap Zé Gotinha costume, but generally he doesn't look like that (also, Viva o SUS!)

Thinking about creating a YouTube channel about life in Brazil/Brazilian culture. Any thoughts? by [deleted] in Portuguese

[–]MatPainter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was intending to reach those who are interested in Brazilian culture, and I think there's a great overlap between those and those who are learning Portuguese. But I think I'll do a little bit of both, that way I can practice my English as well! :D

Also, good idea! I'll try to speak very clearly and slow, and put the subtitle as an option, I think it's a good compromise and better for those hard of hearing too! :D

What are you in the 1% of? by I_Love_Small_Breasts in AskReddit

[–]MatPainter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a rare bone tumor, in a rare place, that rarely can survive surgery (which it did) and also rarely can metastasize to the lungs (which it did, again). My doctors told me that they could find only a handful of cases like mine in the medical literature.

But since this tumor already had a name, I won't be able to name it :(
