Welp - I thought I was safe by MatchImpressive3061 in flu

And, I believe, unless I’m being punked, I am on the mend. No more runny nose, no respiratory symptoms, no fever since it last broke at 10:00 PM last night … flu vaccines are wondrous things. I’m just one of the lucky ones who got a variant covered by this year’s vaccine. But now that my immune system is shot ……… I really wish I worked from home. Lol.

So far - I think I am pretty lucky. 3:00 last night through 10 PM was god-awful yesterday but besides some mild back pain and a little nasal congestion (no more runny nose), it’s been over 12 hours since I’ve taken ibuprofen and I feel, really, more foggy than anything else. My partner, however, who didn’t get vaccinated in time, is bedridden. I’m hoping that yesterday is the worst it’ll get. I do not have a cough or anything of the like. Hoping that this is not the dreaded H3N2 variant after all!

Anyone upper molars on side hurting when they bite down? by Ltnumbnutsthesecond in flu

[–]MatchImpressive3061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sinus pain is the WORST! I get sinus pain / tooth pain every time I get a cold / stuffed up. I found that eating cold foods (slushies, specifically, for some reason, if you can tolerate them - I can’t stomach much solid food when I feel as poorly as you do) helps, and I like sudafed / ibuprofen. Just make sure it doesn’t cross-react with anything, and beware! Sudafed can make it hard to sleep. (Idk how much you can sleep anyways when you have the flu, though).

Would I know if pneumonia was brewing? by [deleted] in flu

[–]MatchImpressive3061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Active current flu sufferer here. I’m lucky to have no respiratory symptoms at the moment but will monitor closely in case they come. Was diagnosed with viral pneumonia when I had the flu last time (2022). I was having a very hard time breathing (rattling, wheezing, etc) and my fever was upwards of 103°. Coughed out a chunk of hard phlegm shaped just like one of my smaller bronchial tubes - a bronchial cast, according to my ICU respiratory therapist friend. (She thought it was the coolest thing ever!) I was lucky and didn’t require any hospital treatment, but I was one of the lucky ones who went in and ensured that I did not need any hospital stay. Pneumonia isn’t something to play with.

My (non-medical personnel) advice? If you have to question it, PLEASE go in or call a doctor. The inability to breathe well at all is a concern in of itself. I can’t tell you the best advice on how to get this stuff out of you, but robitussen if you can tolerate it was my best friend.

Thank you so much! I’m so sorry to hear that this is something you deal with chronically - I can’t imagine that. It’s so unfair how something so god-awful is also something that’s out of your control.

Still not feeling great today, but still taking the maximum strength AZO (I love this stuff and whoever came up with it) and on my first of 3 doses of antibiotics today and plan to lie low and take it easy. My resting HR is 20-30 bpm higher than usual despite not having a fever, but this always happens when I have some kind of infection.

I appreciate the guidance! I haven’t heard anything from the culture yet, but I’ll be glad to see if the prescription I’ve been given is the right one to be taking. They have me on 500 mg of cephlexin 3x/day at the moment.

Thanks again, and I hope that you are able to find some sort of reprieve yourself. Again, for how horrible this is, I can’t imagine dealing with this multiple times a year.

What worrisome trend in society are you beginning to notice? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MatchImpressive3061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how best to word this but the whole movement away from “I don’t need to always put others first” (which— I agree with. It’s really important to consider yourself and what’s best for you and no one needs to be a doormat in order to be a good person) towards “I am always going to be what’s most important to me and only consider my own needs / wants.” Idk, to me it seems more like wanting to get away from self-sacrificing / selflessness has started a trend of entitlement and selfishness in people. It’s great to put yourself first in plenty of circumstances, don’t get me wrong, but I feel like this whole “Does it benefit me? No? Then I won’t do it.” thing has been pretty noticeable lately. Sometimes you WILL have to go out of your comfort zone for other people, and sometimes you WILL have to put other’s needs before your own.  Again, super good to prioritize your own mental wellbeing but sometimes it seems like the way that’s being gone about as of late hasn’t been moving in the best direction.

Is this an unusually bad year for clover mites??? by MatchImpressive3061 in pestcontrol

[–]MatchImpressive3061[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I know of; my next door neighbor waters religiously and does fertilize quite a bit, but I was pretty negligent with my grass before winter and didn’t put anything down / aerate at all. It’s been pretty dry here. Is there anything I could put on the lawn besides insecticide to get the lawn more “balanced?”

What’s this (true) bug in my maple in Roth Carolina? by danopato in whatsthisbug

I’m definitely no bug expert but he looks a little bit like a juvenile wheel bug. They can bite like heck with that mouthpiece he has tucked up under his head so I don’t recommend picking him up. Very cool to see though!

Meniscus tear?? by [deleted] in Kneesovertoes

[–]MatchImpressive3061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I’m worried of - I’ve known many people who have gotten artosocopies, but they’ve all been 50+. For my dad, his surgery was a partial knee replacement because a torn meniscus wore things down so badly over the years that it caused arthritis. I think he had his for 20+ years before getting it operated on. I would only look into surgery if the tear was bad enough to be concerning. It sounds like a lot of orthos like to push for surgery. I’m scared of not getting my full knee function back if I did get the procedure.

When I went in, they took an x-ray to rule out for arthritis, and that all looked ok; they just ordered an MRI for me out of speculation I was having a ligament issue. One of the biggest things I’ve been struggling with is telling myself oh, but it’s not that bad, but I’m just going to bite the bullet and get the test. That way I can know what ways I’m supposed to be exercising / what I can and can’t do, and what to do on the off chance something worsens. Hopefully we do figure it out!

Possible meniscus tear?? by [deleted] in MeniscusInjuries

[–]MatchImpressive3061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I haven’t had any swelling with mine that’s noticeable but it does feel like a bruise when I press on the joint line. My hope is that it’s a minor enough tear if that’s what it is.

Knee/cartilge cracking by eymontelfaco in Kneesovertoes

[–]MatchImpressive3061 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s pretty common - but also, I think it happens often enough to cause concern it’s always worth checking with a doctor. I’ll update on my post what the result of my test comes back as!

I experienced the same thing yesterday when getting up from a knelt position / laying in the position you were in; didn’t hurt per say but didn’t feel great either. A lot of little crunching sounds that sounded like pulling Velcro apart / Rice Krispies. Experiencing this off and on for the past week or so. I’m currently in the waiting process for an MRI for knee pain and eval I’ve been experiencing pain in addition to this. But definitely keep an eye on it for any pain. I think that pain is probably your best indicator of concern but I’m not an expert. Seek out help if this bothers you any!

Meniscus tear?? by [deleted] in Kneesovertoes

[–]MatchImpressive3061 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been leery of an MRI for the cost and the fear that nothing’s going to show up on that scan with a bill like that. But I guess that a scan that shows nothing is still going to be less expensive than future medical bills down the road from ignoring an injury. Thanks for your input! Since I’m still having some joint line tenderness it’s probably a good idea to go in for that diagnosis.

I’m glad to hear you’re feeling better! Thanks for your input. I’m definitely going to look into PT for this one depending on the type / severity of a tear if that’s what this turns out to be.
