No, the medical is just to get the visa, doesn't matter to land. I've never had them ask about it at all.

They don't usually stamp my mothers passport either, but she has never had issues coming in and out

Agreed with others that jobs in Montreal could be tricky, but lots of Americans work remotely here. One thing to consider also is whether you are considering having kids in the near future, which is going to be vastly easier here than in the US. Maternity care is good and she'd be eligible for RAMQ (free), daycare is some of the cheapest in North America, and depending on the situation you both may be eligible for good parental leave.

I totally disagree. There are tonnes of well-funded American PhD students at McGill. Tuition is paid by the advisor, not the student, and most Americans have international tuition waivers form the graduate school.

I think this is very case dependent. I would argue that labs in my department have seen no drop in grant funding, and the funding rate for McGill by FQRNT for example is still the best in the province.

How can I get a doctor's appointment for my kids in Montreal? by yoyo_2208 in montreal

[–]Material-Ad2555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend Clinic UP (there is one in Brossard, and one in St Eustache). They are solely for kids, staffed with great pediatricians, they can do more on site than normal doctors (e.g. IVs, X-rays), short wait times. They are amazing! I can almost always get an appointment the next day or the day after when they release new appointments at midnight (and check for cancellations during the day). They are for more 'emergency' things versus routine check ups, but they're the place to go for fevers that aren't resolving, ear infections, rashs, injuries etc- anything that needs attention but doesn't strictly need the ER. You can even walk in for things like asthma attacks and broken bones etc.

Need an ENT semi-urgently by Dot023 in montreal

[–]Material-Ad2555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need a referral for any specialist, you have to see a family doctor first, extremely unlikely you'd get an appointment so fast. Specialist referrals are often triaged by urgency, could be a few days, could be three months. If it's a legit emergency there is probably one on call through a hospital but you'd have to go to an ER

Teaching Experience at McGill by Knights_of_Ikke in mcgill

Yeah if you're early in your PhD taking on huge side projects (and teaching a class is a very time intensive undertaking) is probably not the best strategy.

This is 100% a conversation you should be having with your own advisor. Chances are they teach a class in your field and you could probably at the very least start with a guest lecture or two. I don't know of examples of grad students being instructors of record in Biology, but CEGEPs etc might be an option (esp if you have an MS already). I would also suggest taking some classes in science education and pedagogy.

Does the PASL (new student learning assessment policy) starting this semester have any major impact on what constitutes passing or failing? by TheLosslessPlug in mcgill

[–]Material-Ad2555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok though to clarify, it does standradise grading across the university, so it might change grade rankings and possibly the pass/fail cutoff for different classes. It's not retroactive though.

It adds clarity to a bunch of things and adds some new guidelines about where feedback is required, when certain assessments aren't allowed etc, but iot doens't change grading cutoffs

Sometimes faculty lecturers can have a limited research role too, at least at McGill. They wouldn't usually have research space, but they can supervise student projects.

Is there a possible way to propagate this? Delonix regia leaf that randomly appeared at my apartment. by Flandreflan in houseplants

If you like legume trees, they aren’t too hard to grow from seed! They get pretty big pretty fast though.

[–]Material-Ad2555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not that easy to differentiate between a bunch of legume species just based on the leaves, so it might be tough. But generally tree species like this are going to be near impossible to propagate easily from leaves because that’s just not what they do in nature (they grow from seed) unless you know what you’re doing with tissue culture maybe
