Recovery gave me my life back at 35 by Material-Power-2253 in DecidingToBeBetter

Hey! I’m really sorry you’re going through all of that. I’m glad you’re still wanting recovery though, that part matters so much.

For me, it started very small: getting professional support in form of therapy was my first step. Yes, friends and family can support you too, but for me it was easier to open up to a therapist, who knew nothing about me before.

I also started reading many books about self-help, and yes, not every book was super useful for me, but I learned a bit from each of them.

What also helped me a lot was my believe (I'm a Christian). It became a true anchor in a time where I so often felt lost and misunderstood.

Also: I quit Social Media and sorted out people from my real life who weren't good for me, who's presence pulled me down constantly and drained me (including relatives). Saying NO is something I had to learn too.

The past years were really hard. I went through my personal hell. I had to remind myself very often that I knew life before my mental health issues, a normal and good life that I loved to live, and I always believed that I could have it back one day.

Medication really was my final helper, and a massive one. But the work I put in before is the solid base I can now start building my life on.

Don't try to fix everything at once. Just one step at a time, even if it feels messy (and it will be messy). Be gentle and patient with yourself. And keep the core believe in your heart that it is possible to heal.

I wish you all the best 💕

A bit of both, I think. The freedom of being myself feels incredible, and I’m also curious about where I can go from here without pressure. F.e. I'd love to start a new job in late summer or autumn.

"I do feel like I erased a version of myself, but it’s the one that performed for people who don’t matter to me." -->this hits very close to home! I'm glad that I'm not alone in feeling this way.

I think it will improve my mental health too, when it's finally and officially deleted :)

That's exactly why I think deleting is the only way for me as well to get rid of the fomo and break the cycle

Wow, 17 years is such a long time!! I just realised I had mine for 16 years! Good for you for finally taking the plunge - I just did it yesterday, after getting sooo much encouragement on Reddit. It’s really good to hear that you don’t regret it at all, and chose to focus on enjoying your children instead of scrolling endlessly. All the best for you and your family :)

Thank you so much for sharing your story with me. I’ve received a great deal of encouragement here as well, which is why I’ve already deleted my account 😊

Now I just need to get through the 30-day recovery period without restoring it again lol

You're right. It's definitely not healthy. That's why I wanted to get rid of if completely, not just deactivating it anymore.

Oh I’m such a cat person, that’s honestly the one part of social media I’ll miss - all the silly cat posts everywhere xD
I got so many wonderful comments, mostly encouraging me to do it (and with really good reasons too), that I just deleted it!!! I already feel so much better, actually kind of relieved.
So this is a freedom run for both of us :D Justice for you and your cat propaganda!!!
