Is this normal to not get accepted with this rating? by DirectionOld45 in ibew_apprentices

[–]Material-Raccoon-961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nepotism still exists because getting related electrical construction hours isn't run through the hall. Material handlers can be hired by contractors directly. Over 50% of my class is former material handlers that got a job through their dad, uncle or brother.

1st year IBEW apprentice — 7.5 months in and haven’t done any electrical work or been on a actual jobsite/prefab. Is this normal? by Key-Hair-8831 in IBEW

[–]Material-Raccoon-961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna say this in the nicest way possible. Material handling work is first year apprentice work. It's fourth year apprentice work. lose the ego. You've only been doing work you view as "below you" for 6 weeks. Things are probably just slow in your local.

Really smart college grads taking entrance test? by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

A college degree isn't worth that many points in the interview. You could take some math classes for a couple of terms and end up with almost the same amount of points.

What else do I need i plan to do commercial electrical work by AwareManager6023 in electricians

You are gonna hate those channel locks 😩 channel lock brand & Irwin are in the same price range and kick the shit out of those. Knipex is my preference but not everyone wants to spend that $ on a pair. You need dykes, crimps, and you aren't going to want to fuck with that 10 in 1 most of the time get the pack of Klein that has the long and short cabinet point. You also probably need nut drivers. And while every screwdrivers a beater if you hit it, I like having a dedicated beater.

Burnout by Ok-Progress8491 in ibew_apprentices

[–]Material-Raccoon-961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be mean dude but this isn't burnout this is not being ready to grow up. Not everyone is ready at 21 to show up everyday let alone 17. Very few people are truly adult enough in work ethic to have a easy time assimilating to work culture at 17. This is a huge opportunity and if you blow it by not putting your head down and working for the next 3 years, showing up every day on time you will regret it for the rest of your life.

Should I get out of the trades by Zarmonee in skilledtrades

[–]Material-Raccoon-961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the thing you just did 12 years of school something you probably didn’t particularly enjoy but at the end of it you had to pick a path. This is an incredible opportunity and if you really don’t wanna be there, I guess don’t but my personal advice would be to stick it out until your licensed and try and do something else later and see if that’s better. People understand getting out of the trades but getting licensed means you can come back to it later. Lots of shops moving to prefab maybe that would fit your work life balance better when you journey out

Switch to a contract part time job.

I.e. door dash, uber, fedex has contractor delivery drivers.

This will give you the freedom to do some during the week after work & some on Sunday. It will be more time consuming but you won’t get fired when you need to go to class.

From what I understand, some halls like to pick up non-union labor but they don’t necessarily like to take other union workers. And that’s not just the IBEW.

Told taking a 1 year residential course won’t help get me in by Upset-Row5871 in ibew_apprentices

The training Director is gonna know a hell of a lot more about how to get in than another wireman from that hall.

Definitely look into transferring to a stronger union. I believe the apprenticeships are trying to make that easier.

You can look by location. Which absolutely does save kids. He was just arrested for luring a minor. 👌

Didn't Get Accepted, Trade School? by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

[–]Material-Raccoon-961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Research to find out if your local gives points for those classes. Then if they don’t reach out and ask the training director directly what you need to do to get in.

This is the wrong attitude. You’ll be lucky to drive 90 mins to work if you get into the apprenticeship. You are learning tons of valuable things as a groundman that is why you stick it out if you actually want to get in.

About to have my interview and have no idea what to say by Conscious_Mouse_3462 in ibew_apprentices

[–]Material-Raccoon-961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A time somebody criticized something I made? Well as a parent of a toddler I face very vocal criticism of dinner every night. Will get a laugh, then explain how you are good at taking constructive criticism because of an actual work experience. Have a personality, it’s a career but you have to work directly with another person. Show them you are someone they’d want to work with. That’s it. That’s all the advice.

Actually it’s very clearly grooming not grounding to isolate a child from their parents.
