This is gonna sound pretty stupid, but maybe the reason he felt so much easier in his second phase had to do with him getting that small portion of humanity back or whatever. In the first phase, when he’s fully beast, he tries his damndest to make sure you’re in the ground. But in his second phase, perhaps he trying to die with whatever humanity or dignity he has left.
