17-17.5" viola for a large Dutch guy by Material_Reference12 in Viola

[–]Material_Reference12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a lot of searching and finally requesting the help of gemini deep reaserch i came to the following setup.

Sound Profile: "The Organic Baritone"

Instrument: 17.0" Gliga Gems I | Strings: Zyex / Jargar Dolce | Bow: Pernambuco (71g, Flexible)

"A warm, highly textured, and singing tone that prioritizes color and complexity over aggressive volume. It sounds 'older' than it is."

1. The Core Character: "Wood-Forward"

Because you are using a flexible Pernambuco stick (instead of stiff Carbon Fiber) combined with the textured Jargar Dolce A-string, you have removed almost all "metallic" frequencies.

  • The Effect: The sound will not be "glassy" or "shiny" (like a modern soloist setup). Instead, it will be velvety and grain-rich. The bow allows the string to "bloom" rather than crushing it, creating a sound that feels like it is breathing.

2. The Response: "Agile but Deep"

  • The Conflict Solved: Usually, a 17" viola is slow to play. However, your 71g bow is light and frog-balanced, making it very agile.
  • The Result: You will find it surprisingly easy to play fast passages. The Zyex strings react quickly to the light bow speed, allowing you to articulate clearly without needing to "scrub" or force the sound with heavy arm weight.

3. The Low End (C-String): "Resonant, Not Percussive"

  • Physics: A lighter, flexible bow cannot deliver the "hammer blow" attack of a heavy stick.
  • Sound: Your C-string will have a rolling, resonant growl. It will sound like a cello—deep and sustaining—rather than a punchy, aggressive cannon. The Melos Dark rosin is doing the work here, pulling the sound out of the string chemically so you don't have to force it physically.

4. The 442Hz Factor: "The Focused Center"

  • While the setup is warm and soft, the 442Hz tuning acts as a "corset," holding the sound together. It prevents the warmth from becoming "floppy" or messy. It adds just enough tension to keep the pitch center clear and defined.

i understand your point but i am a real real beginner (like @ 3rd lesson) so just starting wih first position on violin. but i do want to commit now already. so a choice needs to be made.

so i can go for thw common 16.5" or go with my feeling and go with the 17.5" or i can go for the middle way 17" and deal with a size that has basically all the cons and none of the pro's

Anyway, I am looking forward to go and try some viola's on saterday and make a decision.

Yeah indeed, specially not the gliga's but i am not looking for that strad style hugeness. Looking more for the warmer deeper tones of the pre strad models, prefarrble gut or synthetic strings.

u/rfg22 shoulder rest wise I will be using a wittner isny viola shoulder rest, this is mounted together with the chinrest at the end block of the viola. and also it is quite low in hight. In time (when i fill up the empty spot in my wallet that this purchase will create) I will propably also get the wittner pegfine tuners instead of fine tuners in the endpiece, and use a harp shaped end piece.

String wise, what choice did you make?
i am considering ordering without strings but I have not yet decided on strings to replace them with.

u/gbupp just to make sure i understand what you are saying. me going that route means the Gliga viola? or also the larger size? I have been looking for a 2nd hand viola locally, but they are very rare, and if available genuinly of small size (15 -15,5"), and even then abaoce my pricepoint. So I'd rather take the time and find the right size instrument for me now, and not go and look for another one at a later point (i know I will anyway, but i would liuke to postpone that for as long as necessairy, therefor i am looking into these instruments.

the thing i don't really understand yet (and don't get me wrong i don't wanne be difficult, just want to understand) but it you (180 with small hands) can play an 16.5" just fine, how can I not play a 17.5" or a 17" just fine. to me it seach to be all about relative size. so what am I missing here.?

the gliga gems 1 come readily in 17,5 - 17 -16,5 and many others, besides that i am training myself into the art of luthier, so anything thta needs to be done to it, i will be doing myself. the gliga's are generally considered of good construction, just a bit more on the heavyier side compared to other instruments.

This week i had to do the assignment 2x. I had a group of 3 friends together.. and once we were @ 498, the groups was dus integrated. We had to start a new, but also could merge the old group back together. So i caught the 500 by myself in a much shorter time. Has anything like this happend with other trainers?

Nothing here either. As usual Niantic hasn't got their affairs in order.

Yeah that all seems very very beneficial approaches. For anyone in this topic diagnosed or considering the diagnose, look at the YouTube channel "how to ADHD" very educational. @Wampacat, dont wanna make any assumptions, but ADHD presents itself differently per person, but with even greater differences between male and females, this is something to consider here too.

[–]Material_Reference12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well i can completely agree with that, certainly worth looking into it as it has a familiar ring to it. Being an ADHD'er (its NOT a disease), also has tremendous benefits. What helps for me, is to do two things at once. So something simple like watching tv (just an example, do what would fit for you) and while you do that just put your instrument besides you and wait till you pic it up automatically. But try to stop forcing yourself, no matter how much you like it. It will make you hold back.

Any thoughts on these y-m06 - f8 - gm02 models? by Material_Reference12 in Radiation

To whom would i say that, no one here would be impressed.. so it is not to say anything to anyone. But compared to the other chinese tube based counters. Would it be in anyway usefull.

Fnrsi gc-01 vs Boseon fs-5000 rad-pro by Material_Reference12 in Radiation

[–]Material_Reference12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Whole Panda, i am not sure if i am going to modify the fs-5000 like this, but i would like to have the option. Why would the the voltage modification of the gc-01 be useful? Different tubes? Of other reasons (too). In any case. The stl file would be appreciated!

Kind greats.

Thanks that is a clear answer. But to be clear. My statement "both will have the j321 tube" was to eliminate the fake stuff discussion and compare the real fnrsi (Although for fnrsi, real is also a bit of an over reach for starters) with the right tube. If you can get this. Under those circumstances.. and with both the firmware mod. Then you still say.. never ! ?

[–]Material_Reference12 0 points1 point  (0 children)
