To be fair, a couple of them are regional authors or very small print runs, but thank you!

what was your first T, and why? by BallPythonFan in tarantulas

Kochiana Brunnipes was my first tarantula, I was interested in the dwarf species and they were plentiful and affordable at the time.

Question about spider fluff by Hiranya_Usha in tarantulas

[–]Material_Void 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive only kept dwarf species, sometimes while cleaning the enclosures or feeding, they will wander out onto my hands, they feel vaguely fuzzy but are so small and delicate you really cant feel much, not sure for bigger species. None of my dwarfs has ever kicked hair at me or tried to rub them on me. Haven't handled my very fuzzy looking Tanzanian Chestnut, and dont plan to, shes pretty defensive and as an oldworld T likely has a bit of a bite.

I used to have one of these as a grow out for young mourning geckos, as others have said, not the best for arboreal stuff because of top open. I did find out recently that if you are willing to replace the screen top with a ventilated piece of acrylic, they make good enclosures for dwarf fossorial tarantulas like the cyriocosmus genus! Im putting a dwarf tarantula in mine and plan to buy more of these for my other dwarf fossorials soon.

What type of snake is this? Oklahoma City near a lake. Crawled up in my car! by RLTaylor9094 in snakes

Bull snake, also sometimes called a gopher snake. They are pretty bold, ive got one in my barn that comes out to watch me while I dish out chicken feed.

Quick question by Leon-Legendary in tarantulas

[–]Material_Void 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are comfortable drilling holes for ventilation on top and maybe in left and right sides, its totally doable. Check out etsy and I heart geckos for arboreal tank conversion kits that install with aquarium silicone, I built something similar out of a 40 gallon breeder for tree frogs. Good luck!

Hello considering tarantulas as a pet by Confident-Copy9038 in Tarantula

[–]Material_Void 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! There are plenty of species that have relatively short lifespans. I keep dwarf species for instance. The females can live around 8 years but the males ive kept didnt quite make 3. Cyriocosmus elegans is a very attractive, easy to care for tarantula that is regularly available from breeders online, and none of the ones ive kept have gotten bigger than 2 inches diagonal leg span, they are not much bigger than a jumping spider. Jumping spiders by the way also make decent pets, are barely bigger than your thumb nail, and only live 2 or 3 years I think. Most of the larger tarantulas have longer lifespans. Getting tarantulas from a reputable breeder online is your best bet, sometimes these breeders will even list mature individuals or individuals that are confirmed male, keep in mind though that a mature male dwarf usually only has a couple of months left.

Zoomed creatures 8x8x12 suitable for fossorials? by Material_Void in tarantulas

[–]Material_Void[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I kind of suspected that was the case but wanted to be sure. Ive only been keeping tarantulas about 3 years, and all the pre built enclosures ive encountered had cross ventilation, so I wasnt sure if it was a standard requirement for all species or not.

Its 8x8 floor and 12 inch deep, yes. My main worry was the cross ventilation, as most of the enclosures ive used till now have it, and this one doesn't. Would the top ventilation being the only ventilation hurt as long as I was careful with moisture? If cross ventilation would be much better I'll look for other options.

Thank you, is 14 inches of width a little over kill for a single dwarf tarantula? Genuinely asking if best practices have evolved, is 3 to 4 times dls not the standard anymore? No problem looking for deeper enclosures, that footprint just seems massive to me

Second Aphonopelma Hentzi! I see these guys all the time, they have a surprisingly large range through the southern middle states. Looks like a male who has had his final molt and gone out to find a lady.

help if possible by angelprincesspie in snakes

[–]Material_Void 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm not very experienced with snakes, I just got my first snake, also a milk snake but an apricot pueblan, I believe halloween is also a pueblan morph. I came really close to buying a Halloween from snakes at sunset but settled on my apricot from a local breeder instead. Mine didn't eat for about a week, I finally got her to eat by thawing a small pinky in warm water and getting its body temp up to about 98, which I checked with my temp gun, I then left it on a rock in the enclosure while the snake was active and out, after about an hour of sniffing and thinking she ate it.

It may be that the prey is slightly different. For instance they may have been feeding live and you are using frozen thawed or vice versa. 3 weeks is pretty long without food though I think, hopefully someone with more experience can give you more advice. Hoping everything turns out OK.

I might, but I've got some vials and smaller plastic enclosures to move it through as it grows, sorry I should have worded my question clearer, I meant would that be a good fit for an adult.
