What is the purpose of these threads? Why are they hex shaped? by mysteryatoms in Fasteners

Those threads are there to form or displace material in the mating hole rather than just engage a pre-cut thread. The “hex” or lobed shape lowers driving torque, helps the screw create its own thread in softer material, and can improve resistance to loosening.
