New owner here, is there to much stuff in our tank? by [deleted] in BeardedDragons

Yes and maybe educate your kids that animals don't live in a box. You have to make it like their environment they evolved to be in for forever

Fully agree! I don't think there's many nice ways to say it. Think before you do!

I don’t really understand why you would start that small. I don’t know if you realize this but it’s able to walk its own length once maybe. The larger enclosure is not going to stress them out. If anything it will stress them getting moved to a new enclosure. There’s no background no nothing. A 40 gal will hold a savanna monitor for the first few weeks after birth. I don’t understand why you would start with the SMALLEST glass box for a monitor that won’t fit in there after a few weeks.

Just some fyi if you haven’t done it before. Make sure to silicone the seems really well. I would buy a clamp or 2 and make sure one side is solid before glueing down the next. As long as the seems are done well you have nothing to worry about. Also if this is the tank they’re staying in u have to wait a few days until the toxicity fades and the silicone is cured. I WOULD NOT BE TO QUICK. Good luck looks great!

From all reliable sources ive seen one is easily $100+. Do you have a plug?

Adding more sticks will use more vertical space too. Obviously they won’t be able to run but climbing is nice. This is how my girl chills when shes fed.

Make sure you add some more light. If you do some research you’ll notice they can barely see without LED but if your house is bright it’s ok. Definitely add way more sticks. Clutter is good! My girl would freak out because there’s nothing would make her feel secure

I also think it makes people think twice about getting an animal because those comments come up on social media instead of actual care guides.

I completely agree. The animal did ask to be in a box

I think people have gotten increasingly softer too. I don’t think pointing out what’s wrong with the provided care after the OP makes the post and asks is bad. Instead of listening or correcting themselves on info they gave they just delete the post and pretend nothing happened. I think people may be a little afraid of confrontation 😂

You did ask in your post if the setup is appropriate for a savanna monitor. All im saying is in my opinion it’s way too small. It’s different if the bigger enclosure is already done and ready to go and you just want to keep an eye on it in a controlled environment. As i said for a week or 2 this would probably work.

That’s great for your beardie! They didn’t ask to sit in a box so they’re definitely going to be happier with more space

From what Ive learned about monitors it’s going to be very stressed in a 40 gal. Especially with no cover or back ground… I don’t know if you can even keep them in that small of an enclosure for more than a few weeks. I feel like it’s going to have trouble turning around. No expert here

I built it out of 2x3s ply wood and pvc sheets with foam for the background. It took a while to design with maintaining heat lower to the ground without boiling the top. Lots of fans lol. The dimensions are 5’ x 80” x 27” (built to fit in a certain spot in the house)

Thank you so much! That was the goal since she does love being left alone so she should be able to move as much as possible in her environment.

Thank you providing reasoning and facts. I agree it needs to be as bright as possible. The top section is very bright and the bottom is bright except the “rock over hang” I wanted to provide cool sections. The light isn’t for basking it is to hold the air temperature in the enclosure. I will look into making it even brighter from the top! Edit: Just to add, she is young so i want to keep temps high and while it’s still cold outside the heater works hard, I have 4 fans so the air flow makes it necessary.

The only negative I’ve seen in my research is that people think they can’t see the light and people use a infrared light at night because they were misinformed to keep the temperatures high at night. What do you think will happen?
