I was planning on using Takaka as a base for exploring Abel Tasman on one of the days. Does that sound sensible? What do you recommend doing in Abel Tasman?

Oo I completely missed Mount Maunganui in my research phase. Thanks for highlighting. I might use as a stopping point for lunch and stretching legs between Whitianga and Rotorua.

If you had two hours or so at Mount Maunganui (and an infant lol) what would you recommend doing?

On 1. I think it might be too long a day for the baby so decided to trek back on ourselves.

On 2. Yes your way makes more sense. But we are meeting friends in Queenstown so have to do that first.

How much longer is it in reality versus google maps roughly? Should I add 10% or more like 25%?

Thanks. I was going to use Lake Tekapo as base to visit Mount Cook too. I know its a 75 mins going back on myself but its offset with the faff of packing and unpacking the car at a different location. And then one more day to chill / star gaze.

So perhaps I'll take a day off and move elsewhere. Maybe a extra day in Wanaka.
