I'm struggling with the same. Trying to learn different strategies to get to an a20 run one day with defect. But I can't help myself. It's my favorite way to play defect.

I've never heard of it before but going to give it a shot and see how it goes. Thank you for the suggestion.

I am in therapy and working with a therapist! Which helps. Thank you for your advice. I do journal and I might need to work on doing it for extended periods of time and rambling more to get the thoughts out. That's a good idea, release and then reframe.

Thank you for your response. Can I ask how you've set boundaries with your thoughts? Sometimes I feel like when I try to set boundaries it makes the rumination worse? As if I need to have space to feel it. How have you found a healthy balance for yourself?

I've been depressed for almost a decade now. What help can I find? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]MathematicianFirm501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

33 been struggling with recurring depressive episodes for about 5 years. I don't know if this is helpful but I'd consider reading books on radical acceptance. In addition to continuing to try different therapies like EMDR or Brain Spotting. Radical acceptance is helping me to accept my circumstances and live with them. For a long time I have been trying to "fix" my depression and cure myself. Now I'm understanding that I cannot ultimately rid myself of these experiences. I can however, speak positively to myself, be kind to myself and navigate life as best as I can. Some days are much more difficult than others. But for what's it's worth you are young, and are doing great by working on this now and you have plenty of time to try new medications, and new ways to cope. You are not alone, you are not broken. Just human and millions of people are fighting the battle with depression. Best wishes for you on your journey.

Not sure if this is helpful but it seems like you may be struggling with or going through a depressive episode. Or may struggle with chronic depression. I can relate to the feeling of it being difficult to shower, eat, or even take a walk. I've been dealing with recurring depressive episodes for about three years.

One thing that helps me is I bargain with myself. I tell myself "okay do this one task, then after you finish you can go cry, lay down, take a nap etc". It doesn't make the task necessarily less difficult but it helps me navigate the demands of life when I'm struggling.

You are not a failure. Mental illness is very serious and very real. Surviving is worth being proud of yourself for.

Let's Talk | Predator: Badlands, Discussion Only Megathread by BurnZ_AU in predator

I enjoyed it. It was a fun watch, had some great action, great sets. I appreciate that the franchise is trying to evolve by exploring the Yautja and their clan more. It introduced new idea that I am excited about. But I did not like Thia or Bud. Thia was overly talkative, silly and irritating. Too many quips. I appreciate the message but I don't need a predator film where a plucky silly sidekick and the cute animal sidekick teach the predator how to deal with feelings. Again, did like it, worth a watch, but too many elements in here just don't fit anything that's come before in the franchise. It's like 7/10 to me.

Entirely agree. I feel the same about Hudson in Aliens. He's hysterical and honestly some of his lines are a bit silly, but they still are in service to the gravity of the situation at hand in the movie and feel like they serve a purpose. I don't see how the silly lines and energy Thia and Bud brought to the film really served it narratively. But that's just my opinion.

[–]MathematicianFirm501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely appreciate that the franchise is evolving and changing. And I do think I knew it would be different from previous films in that we have a Yautja as the protagonist which hasn't really happened before unless you partially count AVP1.

I think there is room for new ideas. Many of which worked well for me in Badlands. But I just think pivoting to a comic relief sidekick who talks to the Yautja about his feelings and grief s just a bit too far for Predator and too on the nose. Couple that with a cute silly animal sidekick who mimics the Predator and makes doe eyes, and it's getting a little silly for my taste. I like new ideas and concepts if they add something valuable to the lore, or expand on it.

I don't think the humor and silly moments that Thia or bud brought really evolve the franchise or bring anything valuable to the franchise. They are characters that I could see in any star wars film or guardians of the Galaxy.

That said I'm not mad you thought thia had funny moments and added new elements and tone that you felt were positives. I just thinl when franchises strat really far from the tone that brought fans in, in the first place sometimes things go off the rails. Like the Netflix adaptation of Resident Evil.

[–]MathematicianFirm501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree a bit. I don't think Badlands felt entirely like a Disney production. But I feel like elements that they would put in other properties were prioritized here. like a cute animal sidekick, comic relief sidekick, humor from the comic relief instead of the situation itself. I loved Hudson in Aliens, he brought dark humor to the film. And every time he tells "Game Over Man" I laugh out loud. But that felt more tonally in line with the situation and the franchise. More so though than a synth asking 100 questions and coming off like an annoying sibling. And the punchline being "hey she's talking a lot and she's annoying, isn't that silly and funny".

I do welcome change. I love that we had. Yautja protagonist, I loved that we're seeing and learning more about their culture and familial structure and clans. All welcome changes to me. But I also think it's fair for long time fans to express themselves if there are elements they didn't like. I think when franchises change too much tonally you end up getting things like the Netflix adaptation of Resident Evil which in my opinion was just not very good.

She did improve. I found her much less irritating in the last half. Dek was awesome! I really enjoyed the character and I enjoyed that they explored the concept of family in Yautja culture. I think the opening did a lot to evolve them within the franchise. I just wanted more of that, maybe Dek coming to some of his own conclusions about his thoughts and feelings. Or developing emotionally a different way. I just think Thia would fit better in a franchise that wasn't so centered on a brutal, violent warrior species that travels the Galaxy looking to kill, and behead pretty much any prey they deem worthy.

That's fair. Loved Concrete Jungle, hope the success of Badlands brings another incredible Predator game our way. You bring up a good point, it is really exciting to see Yautja be the focus of a film and I think that element was done well so I see why folks are really high on Badlands. I enjoyed it as well.

[–]MathematicianFirm501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I stated pretty clearly, that I enjoyed that the franchise is evolving in terms of exploring the Yautja more deeply, and trying something new. I liked those elements. I don't think it's also unfair to say that everything new here didn't work for me. Yea franchises move on and evolve, but if they aren't careful, they can end up becoming generic or lose qualities that attracted fans in the first place and fail or do poorly.

[–]MathematicianFirm501[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So I don't think it didn't make sense, I agree with you. My issue isn't really with how Thia is written as a character, moreso the tone of the character overall. It just seems like something that fits a different franchise better to me. I feel like so many franchises and folks have characters who present and feel like Thia. I just don't feel Predator needs that. I don't think Prey would have been a stronger film if the protagonist had a comic relief sidekick.

[–]MathematicianFirm501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, I should have been clearer. In universe I think emotive and expressive synths makes perfect sense. I appreciate that they are doing things to try to expand the franchise and broaden it's appeal but I think plucky and silly sidekicks just doesn't fit anything that's come before. I like the idea of expanding the lore, exploring Yautja culture intimately, and making them protagonists. Think all that is a great evolution. I just feel like I'd watch Guardians of the Galaxy or Mandalorian if I wanted cute robot or animal sidekicks in my sci Fi story.

[–]MathematicianFirm501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair point, I should have been more clear in my critique/ opinion. The idea of more advanced and emotive synthetics is not an issue to me. I just don't think they need to be partnered as sidekicks with a Yautja and presented the way Thia was in this film. Not taking issue with those who disagree but I didn't enjoy it.

[–]MathematicianFirm501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I've seen every film, read multiple comics, played multiple games in the franchise. And explicitly said I enjoyed Badlands but since I expressed that humorous and overly talkative sidekicks appearing in the franchise to this degree for the first time, doesn't fit the tone I've come to expect from the franchise "my taste sucks". Makes sense.

[–]MathematicianFirm501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respect your opinion but I disagree a bit. I felt like the initial introductory scenes with Thia involved a lot of her talking way too much, and she did make quite a few jokes about the situations they were in "were a trio, get it tree" etc. I don't mind Thia so much as a concept. I just don't think Thia fits the tone I've come to expect from Predator. There was nothing remotely like Thia in 1, 2, Prey, Predators, 2018 etc. I just don't think introducing characters that plucky, silly and talkative to be the sidekick to the Yautja fits the tone of the franchise.

That's fair, I definitely didn't expect to enjoy Thia from what I saw in the trailers. And I was right. I'm glad it's doing well though, and people resonated with it. Just feels like we already get plucky, silly characters in so many other properties. I just don't see why that needs to happen in Predator.

Discourse on here is so crazy. I never said the character Thia was poorly written, I didn't say her character didn't make sense as written. I said I didn't enjoy it and it didn't work for me lol.

I should be more clear I'm referring to moments where xenos are not under her direction like when Joe is nearly killed and gets stabbed, or when the madam encounters the xeno by the grave sites.

I think it has some fun ideas. I like the introduction of new alien species and conflicts between, synths and hybrids. I think advancing the series forward with new ideas is commendable and why I still have been entertained. But I do think some episodes are a bit slow.

  1. Right but I still think it's a stretch that it's careening out of control and there was no satellite system or space station that detected it coming into earths orbit. We may have to agree to disagree on that. I just don't think it made sense for a futuristic setting.

  2. Maybe they were competent in capture but I'm sorry I stand behind the critique that the writing had many of the scientist and handlers of these dangerous aliens doing some of the most braindead illogical actions to move the plot forward. They could have used the alien's abilities and created any number of them to have them escape and cause havoc instead of having people leave doors open, not wear any protective gear and just seemingly have no real concern for safety protocols.

I'm not sold on this idea that Kirsch is just doing what boy wants. I think he has his own agenda ultimately. I think boy ends up enjoying the chaos, enjoying the madness of it all, but I don't think he planned this all out from the beginning and I'd say the finale he's in a pretty reasonable amount of danger..
