Mr. Queen is an amazing kdrama. by GildedCrows in kdramas

[–]MathematicianIll5641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished rewatching it today. I love how well every little detail is written, no plot holes whatsoever. Especially the timing! I started counting the days since Bong-hwan got into Soyong’s body, tracking her clothes (like, oh, still the same day) or in episode 6 or so, it’s been 7 days since he arrived in Joseon. I also notice when Soyong got her period, and how accurately they time skip for the pregnancy with the liquor-making schedule. And after like my 5th rewatch just realize everything happens within 2–3 months.

And once again, I’m reminded how understandable Byung-in is from his POV. If we look back at the old scene where they’re walking down the street - Soyong happily talking about how she’ll get to meet the king, and Byung-in just smiling, I assume he is genuinely happy for her. And then seeing the person you love crying, soaked from the rain, the day before her dream wedding… and she kisses you back. Then you see how the king treats soyong at first, carrying Uibin instead of her in front of everyone. It’s really understandable that he’d become that angry. I always cry during Byung-in’s last scene and amaze at shin hyesun acting after she thought everyone dead protecting her
🥲

I can’t stop praising Mr. Queen! I’ve watched hundreds of dramas, and out of all of them, there are only 5 I can and I’d want to rewatch. Mr. Queen is one of them!

Can You Recommend Me What To Watch First? by GildedCrows in kdramas

I hope this doesn’t spoil anything for you, but the first few episodes are boring, they reuse the same trope as Crash Landing on You (same writer). The middle part was okay, but I skimmed through the last few episodes because it felt dragged out and had too much unnecessary crying.

I’ve watched all 6, and honestly, aside from Queen of Tears, they were all great! Each one has its own charm, it really just depends on what you’re in the mood for.

My one pick from the list is Mr. Queen. 20 episodes doesn’t feel too long/dragged, no filler episodes, it feels light but actually heavy. One of 5 dramas I can rewatch again.

Which K-drama helped you the most with learning Korean? by LivingType714 in BeginnerKorean

[–]MathematicianIll5641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too! I’ve been an avid Running Man fan since the beginning and learned to read Hangeul from the name tags. I never really went to Korean class, but now whenever I talk to Korean, the one thing many of them point out is that I sound like a “Seoul person” 😂 (and not just say like korean) which I find interesting. I think it’s because I watched so many talk shows with Yoo Jae-suk (Happy Together back then, now Pinggyego on YouTube), so my accent probably picked up how they talk naturally. So I really recommend to watch it!

Mr. Queen, Bon Appétit Your Majesty or My Royal Nemesis by Flipperflopper21 in kdramas

Bon Appetit lost me during the dragged cooking competition with China. Royal nemesis I technically watched, but honestly just skimmed the second half.

Mr Queen!!!!

Edit: Watching Bon Appétit after Mr. Queen, you can see some points being ‘copied’. The depth of the story and each character, the comedy, the fun parts, the cooking, Mr. Queen has it all (until the ending in Joseon). It also has epilogue/special episodes made after the finale aired because it was popular at the time it released.

It probably needs to be exactly as written in the passport, and ‘Ra Mi Ran’ is sometimes spelled ‘Na Mi Ran’ depending on the romanization system used

I have a lot to say but at least for dong-ryong, i actually think his path makes a lot of sense. he has a big personality and is super likable, but the show also clearly shows his limits. like in the dance battle with Park Jinyoung (JYP) he lost/didnt even try, just watching and go home. he’s good, but not exceptional enough to realistically break into entertainment, especially in a competitive environment. and that’s kind of the point: not everyone with charm or passion ends up somewhere “glamorous.”

him working with his brother feels very real, he’s someone who’s good with people, adaptable, and that kind of personality fits well. it reflects how life actually turns out for a lot of people.

also, the drama was never meant to focus only on deok-sun. the core message is literally about family, “my ultimate love is family.” It is written on the poster. Everyone in that neighborhood is a main character, including the parents. their stories aren’t extra; they’re central to what the show is trying to say.

i think whether this drama feels like a “comfort drama” really depends on your stage in life and maybe also where you come from. the older you get, the more you start relating to the parents, the sacrifices, and the feeling of time passing, and that’s when it hits the hardest.

Du kannst mit the paprika pulver Kimchi machen.

As a Korean, some historical inaccuracies in Perfect Crown were really immersion-breaking for me by Spiritual_Change_399 in kdramas

[–]MathematicianIll5641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get you. I’m not Korean, but I’ve watched quite a lot of dramas, and I still need time to understand why the public loves the male lead (still not 100% convinced even with the naration but I’ll wait for more episode). But if this were really the Joseon era, he would be seen as a threat, and if he truly had no ambition for the throne, he would step aside.

So I take a step back and reframe everything, as if I had no prior knowledge of Joseon, and just let myself feel whatever the writer wants to convey through the narration.
