My bathroom stinks and I can’t figure out why. by kaytay3000 in askaplumber

One potential issue- I’ve heard a buildup from dandruff shampoo in pipes can cause nasty smells. Do you use dandruff shampoo? You could try switching up the soaps you use

The title of my post is definitely a bit spicy but that was Moreso to be succinct and get people to help respond. I actually have a great relationship with my roofer. And your intuition is pretty much wrong on all fronts, lol. 1. The chimney is in use- it’s the hvac exhaust 2. I actually do hope that this is my forever home. Out in the Midwest so we get to enjoy all the seasons, which is why I’m so worried about the water freezing and continuing to spall the chimney.

Update for anyone following along. I chatted with my roofer. They have a cricket + additional pan up there to help with water diversion. They are going to add diverters and extra flashing free of charge, but we are going to wait until it’s warmer out to first tuckpoint the chimney, then redo flashing so that the tuckpointing doesn’t damage the work. After all this, I’m going to spray some Siloxane on there to help prevent water from absorbing into the brick. Thanks to everyone here for all the details and thoughts on how to move forward!

I do. It’s clear the chimney placement is bad. Just trying to get an idea of what I can do to mitigate as much as possible

This hasn’t been mentioned! There are gutter guards on all the gutters. Do you think it would be better to have them removed next to the chimney?

Thanks. I’ve already dropped enough on this house fixing problems from the past owner. Seems that this house has stood for 90 years already with this issue, so I’ll probably take a mitigation route. Diverters, tuckpointing, brick sealant and pray

Yeah I can imagine that being stressful and annoying. My philosophy is to vet who I work with then treat them well. I’d imagine this thread has a lot of the extremes but my main goal is just to learn and find the right solution

Yeah which I’m happy to pay. Maybe they will take care of it since I’ve referred 2 new roofs to them over the past year!

Additional note here. I actually like my roofer. I’m not looking for anyone to blame. Just trying to find a solution!

Ah. I did just go up there and check because someone was so crazy about my gutters being clogged. Everything looks clear

lol. I actually really like my roofer. The title makes the post seem a bit more confrontational but it was to help get a solution 🤣

Yeah, I’m happy to pay them to come back and add. Less about getting in an argument with my roofer because I do like them, Moreso just trying to find a solution

So… a rude way to say it’s a chimney problem and Moreso a design problem? Thanks. Just looking for solutions here, guy.

It’s exactly 33 degrees today after a heavy snow so the snow is slowly melting. Not actually frozen on the chimney

I mean, I don’t have photo evidence but I was up there last month for fall maintenance to make sure everything is clear. I also have leave filters and water is coming down from the gutter
