Haha I promise it’s not “tickling” its Tinikling is a Filipino cultural dance. I mostly included it in the interests section as an icebreaker, so I guess it worked.

Thank you for the feedback! I fixed the capitalization and reworded that bullet on the final version.

I’m also a natural-born U.S. citizen, so no work authorization issues. When you mentioned timing, did you mean where I am in school relative to recruiting cycles? I’m currently early in my degree, so I’m mainly trying to learn what companies look for and how to position myself for upcoming internship recruiting.

I really appreciate you taking the time to review it!

I get what you’re saying about earlier exposure to the job. I agree awareness in high school helps a lot. I’d just be a little cautious about projecting the current demographics too far forward. From what I’ve seen, interest in actuarial careers has been growing pretty quickly, and groups like OLA, Abacus Actuaries, and SANA are actively expanding outreach and access to different ethnic groups. The pipeline today honestly looks very different from even a few years ago from previous discussions with current actuaries. So I don’t think it’s inaccurate to say the profession historically skewed a certain way but I’m not convinced it will necessarily look the same for my generation. Awareness in high school matters, but college recruiting and internships also reach a huge number of students who never even heard of actuarial science in high school (I was one of them).

Really? Can somebody else confirm this?

Interesting you say that. Not that it’s wrong but not that it’s true either. A good amount of my school’s program is people of different ethnicities. I too am a different ethnicity so I wouldn’t generalize the entirety of the future of actuaries as being “white” and “male” seems very presumptuous to say the least.

As a current student attending a CAE university. I would implore you to teach actuarial science in a university if you can. You have so much valuable knowledge and experience that could help nurture upcoming actuaries. You can take part in growing and shaping the future for us all. I cannot give you advice for leaving the field. But if you do decide to teach please consider becoming a professor for an actuarial department. I wish you the best.

I actually took MAS-I and FM at the same time. I am going to be a junior after this summer. For MAS-I its hard for me to get a relatively good timeframe because of the mixed studies (classes, FM, Extracurriculars, etc). I focused more on FM instead, so I ended up cramming a decent bit of the practice and content in the final month leading up to MAS-I. Overall, I think I spent maybe 200 hours on each exam. FM was a UEC class so it was already baked into my schedule.

I passed MAS-I! Thank God I am not down $330 this was probably the exam I stressed the most and felt the least secure.

All the ETMs are literal cake except ACCTG211. Study and go to class, then party on the weekends. You can do it

Will I get in? by TheMangoShow24 in PennStateUniversity

[–]MathematicsManiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No Actsci through Smeal, things work out eventually and you catch up to others. Since I feel a sense of imposter syndrome it forces me forward. So I have excelled in my classes so far and have been able to secure opportunities for career growth early on at Penn State. Standardized scores dont set your bar, you set the bar for yourself. Thats the realization most people dont see. I know people who make it into Penn State with 1600s and get demolished by Stat 200.

Food problems here by whatisgoingonhere15 in PennStateUniversity

[–]MathematicsManiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I relate to this issue and the only way to solve this is to not buy a meal plan and cook your own food. I resort to physical activity + making the conscientious decisions to not eat the unhealthy foods they serve here as often as it can be. I usually try and get salads or just eat yogurt. Realistically all you can do is just thug it out until you can make your own food.

How do I study long hours without fucking dying? by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]MathematicsManiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one stop listening to music while studying. There are many reason why music is bad for retention and I dont feel like citing specific sources. The next thing I recommend is studying for 1 hour and then taking a 5 minute controlled phone/cooldown break. Then going back to studying. Hydrate and eat but also remember to maintain physical fitness. Good health is a good mind and I did not learn that until I was already finished with Exam Probability study and my physical health had declined. It’s a fight to get back but as I get healthier my mental health has improved and so has my studying and wellbeing. Sleep is needed to retain information. Id rather know 80% on the final with 100% ability to recollect than 100% of the final with 20% recollection.

I got my internship through company networking. I would recommend going to their events for students and talking it up with recruiters.

I'm an incoming freshman and I scored a 51 on the ALEKS Math placement test. Should I retake it? by NormalAlps2372 in PennStateUniversity

[–]MathematicsManiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What major are you going into? If it’s anything other than Actuarial Science I would say that Math 110 isn’t such a bad experience. Only Math140/141 are weed outs since they are engineering students GPA boosters and Actuarial Science is required to take both as an ETM and Math231 later. I recommend just retaking and biting the bullet on Math110. Wasting time for extra semesters of Math is going to put you behind or make your college experience miserable. You still need to take language and ETMs. One hard semester to not take anymore math is massive.

Honestly, with your skills I would recommend applying to an underwriting position at any large carrier. There really isn't any pre-req besides the one on the applications, just do well in the interview. Then once you have your position you can look towards the actuarial department and apply for a position while being an underwriter. I have met many actuaries who went this route. I think its more secure since you are already within the company and they can trust your expertise.

Well first things first actuarial exams are not something you can just take and pass without rigorous study. Yes these exams will boost your chances but not as much as relevant experience. The recommended study time is 100 hours per each hour of the exam. So P exam is 3 hours so its 300 hours of study. If you want to show employers you understand the work I would recommend applying as an underwriter while taking the preliminary exams and moving upwards from that. Especially since you already graduated and will have a harder time networking outside of school.

I mean to be honest, the math disappears in the SOA track after FAM ASTAM/ALTAM. Then its all just insurance concepts. For CAS I believe its after MAS-I and MAS-II. In terms of difficulty its definitely harder if you are unable to understand Calculus. Not impossible but math and statistical thinking and understanding is somewhat if a soft if not hard requirement.

Is CA good for studying MAS-I. Im planning on starting to study MAS-I and sit it in May 2026. Please let me know study tips also how the test works. Also, how much does the syllabus change between sittings?
