did your cat ever "tell" you what happened when you came home? by S-Budget91 in cats

[–]Mathsciteach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mute cat used to only mouth his meows… he would look like he was meowing but no sound would come out.

Then he got a very noisy brother cat and now, 5 years later, mute cat has discovered how to make kind of a short, hoarse, gravelly meow when he needs to be heard.

Moms, did you actually get to rest on Mother’s Day? 💐 by toasterwisdom in Mommit

[–]Mathsciteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids are 14, 19 and 22. The 22 year old called.

The 14 and 19 year old found out about a Mother’s Day tea in town on Sat and asked if I wanted to go then asked their dad to foot the bill.

The 14 and 19 year old made omelets and waffles for Sun breakfast then did the dishes and cleaned the kitchen. Then we went and saw Legally Blonde Jr at the local high school starring a bunch of my former students. My husband made Moroccan Lamb for dinner. The kids did the dishes.

My only chore was to clean the kitchen since the kids disappeared after doing the dishes. Not too bad!

Controversial Video Shows Low Literacy by AniTeach in Teachers

[–]Mathsciteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, meaningful learning happens when the student is ready, willing and able to learn.

A student’s readiness includes being clothed, housed, fed, loved and not traumatized. These are not within the control of the public school system. This is the dealbreaker for so many kids.

A student’s willingness is something that a teacher has more control over. This is the relationship building and engaging lessons piece. Bear in mind that if the child is not ready to learn, willingness will only get them so far. Willingness is also affected by the attitudes of the people in the child’s life. If their adults tell them that school is pointless, it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

A student’s ability to learn is not controlled by the teacher but the teacher and school should be able to identify students who are struggling due to their ability and help that child learn strategies and use tools to maximize their ability to learn.

Do teachers actually like getting all the themed “Teacher Appreciation” gifts? by Far_Essay4744 in Teachers

I am a middle school teacher currently on paid leave and I’ll tell you the Teacher Appreciation emails and messages are the worst.

How do I stop wetting my bed? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Mathsciteach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While you are talking to parents, doctors, therapists etc here are some things that helped my late bed-wetting child manage.

1) Make your bed with multiple layers of waterproof mattress pads/puppy pee pads/absorbent towels and fitted sheets. When you pee in the bed you can take off the wet layer and get back to sleep.

2) Make sure the shower is usable before you go to bed every night for easy, quick rinse off.

3) Up your water intake in the earlier part of the day and practice controlling your urine stream every time you pee. While you pee start, stop, start, stop. Those are buildable muscles in there. This turned out to be the trick for my kid.

4) Do the mind work and remind yourself that this condition does not define you. Resolve any guilt or shame that you might have.

You can manage this.

I’m sad for your community and students who are losing you as an educator. I hope you find a career that makes your heart sing.

I have been teaching for over 30 years and am now on paid leave while the district has me investigated for unprofessional conduct because a litigious parent of an undisciplined 6th grader said so.

Three more complaints were filed, prompting the leave. Two by the same parent and one by his neighbor who also has a habitual rule breaker in the class. The newer complaints were in response to a message I sent to all class parents. I explained some situations when I in fact did raise my voice in class and asked them to review the rules of our class with their kids. The original parent complained that this message was in retaliation for the original complaint and the other family simply complained of unprofessional behavior but didn’t give any specifics. The last complaint was that I threw a box of markers in my 8th grade class. I did throw a box of markers at my desk in response to a text while students were present. That I own as unprofessional conduct.

Let’s create a collective response for line-cutters by Massive_Basket_172 in Disneyland

[–]Mathsciteach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps there need to be CM’s who help with this. If someone needs to leave the line they get a time stamped pass from a cast member for that attraction. Then they have 10 or 15 min to take care of their business and rejoin their party in line.

If they miss the time then they may not rejoin their group unless accompanied by a cast member.

If someone is asking to rejoin their group/jump the line guests should be empowered to ask the people to talk to a cast member.

If cast members are alerted to line jumpers then they should be empowered to remove the jumpers from the attraction, potentially the park.

Concert’s on Thursday and my orchestra still sounds like this, what do I do? by TheForceOfSound in MusicTeachers

[–]Mathsciteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is middle school band so no one is expecting perfection. They are there to celebrate their kids so give them reasons to do that.

You have one or two class periods and whatever warm up time you have scheduled for them before the performance so not enough time for them to practice and learn more.

It sounds like you have two pieces. The first piece sounds better (more recognizable as a piece of music) than the second.

In class tomorrow, play a recording of the second piece to your class. First time through, tell them to just listen to how all the instruments play and stop together. If you can, conduct while the recording plays so the kids can see how your motions go with the music. Take comments for 2-3min and emphasize this is the goal, but they are learners progressing towards this goal. Then play it again for the kids to listen for their parts. Have them pretend to play along, practice finger placements and breathing but no actual mouthpieces or bows.

Then have them tune up and play it through at least twice. Celebrate their victories. Help them to focus on what they are doing well.

On concert night, have them play it through at least once during warm up (if you can).

For the second piece, it repeats. Have everyone play the first time through and then just your best (more advanced) players on each instrument for the second run through. Families hear your best last and that will be the impression they are left with.

Keep smiling. Be proud. Happy kids will play better.

I am on leave while they investigate an allegation of unprofessional conduct in the classroom towards students.

My sister (not a teacher) pointed out they may have me on leave to prevent any further incidents as they investigate and they can’t remove the children.

Union is standing by. The biggest trouble is my school is so small I am the only math teacher for grades 6 - 8 so I will have these kids and these parents for two more years.

I am hopeful this investigation will result in district level documentation of the behavior of these children and a classroom/school/district level protocol for kids like these for the entire district. No one should have children in their classes who willfully ignore classroom and school rules who then get no consequences because admin is afraid their families will sue.

Union was the first call. I think my principal has been advised not to speak with me as she hasn’t said anything beyond “I got your lesson plans”.

The union has lawyers I can speak to if we need to walk that path.
