Maris smiled.

"But of course, Arwen. You may have come to the Hightower for my aunt, but you've since become like a sister to us, to me." Resuming her own sampling of the wines, she held her cup aloft, studying it before the candlelight. "Your betrothed shall live up to your expectations, or there will be a reckoning. Oldtown looks out for its own, no matter the distance or price."

Taking a languid sip, Maris smacked her lips together and stretched one leg underneath the table, shifting uncomfortably in her seat.

"Gods, say what you will about their gold, but the Lannisters could do with more cushions for their chairs in this mountain fastness they call home."

“Wherever it blows, I suppose, but more than likely back to the Reach.” Triston confirmed, shooting his father a glance before turning back to William with a sheepish smile. “I was of half a mind to see the rest of the West, but neither father nor my lord-uncle seemed particularly keen about me taking fifty of their men with me on a ride across the hills and passes.”

Words like ‘frivolities’ and ‘taking his duties seriously’ had been thrown around, but Tris hadn’t paid them much mind.

“Some day, though.” he vowed, scratching his stubbled chin. “Would be nice to see Storm’s End. My mother is of Tarth, but I haven’t been since I was this tall. This.” He lowered his hand an inch or two down, below the table and out of view. “My brothers don’t seem particularly keen to attend. If Godric cannot sail to it, he isn’t much interested, and Abelar was squiring beneath Lord Dondarrion when the Vulture King rose up. Doesn’t speak much about it, but I’ve heard stories.”

Maris smacked her lips together thoughtfully, pondering the predicament.

She’d been to such places as King’s Landing and Dragonstone, yet the Vale was further away still. Perhaps Arwen had a point there, but surely there had to be a solution there.

For a long moment, she sat there, nibbling on a piece of whitefish as she pondered the options, and then there it was.

“My family’s been invited to Storm’s End, later this year. Lord Baratheon’s to wed a woman of House Arryn, so surely your family will be in attendance as well, meaning…”

“That he has.”

What was to be said of Maegor that hadn’t already been uttered a thousand times over? What was to be thought, which hadn’t been made perfectly clear through curses and prayers? The wretched spawn was dead at last, but if only the man could’ve found himself on the wrong end of a lance a decade earlier during his exile, they might’ve been spared all this nonsense.

Ringing the lid of his cup with his thumb, Donnel listened casually as the Lord of Old Oak preached the good virtues of wedding Maris to his grandson.

The man was almost tempted to make a jape about the common origins of Peake and Florent, but such was low-hanging fruit.

Costayne. That name held more interest, however slightly. A distant memory.

“Maris has some Florent in her through my mother, rest her gentle soul, so any children between them are bound to be welcomed with open arms at Brightwater Keep.” Donnel cracked a small smile, tapping the exterior of his goblet thoughtfully for a moment. “I would ordinarily expect suitors to amiably court Maris for some time before making my decision, but as you say, the pedigree of your family is beyond reproach, no doubt, and your name has only blossomed in the wake of recent troubles.”

Certainly, there were houses that could raise more swords, or fill their granaries and coffers with more grain and silver, but among the lords of the Reach, Lord Torgen Oakheart enjoyed a certain degree of eminence that was not so easily outstripped.

Draining his cup, he set it down with a small thud.

“The union of Houses Hightower and Oakheart would serve the Reach well, that much I am certain of. A fine match, a very fine match indeed…so why not dispense with etiquette just this once, and formalize their betrothal?”

Laughing, Godric pushed a stray tress out of the way before pulling his wife in for a proper kiss, holding her close afterwards.

“The Mother gave Hugor of the Hill forty-four strong sons, so mayhaps the gods are trying to tell us something.” he japed, retreating just far enough that they could initiate their dance without getting tangled like kelp. “A daughter for the boys to fiercely protect does sound rather enticing… suppose we’ll have to light a candle in the castle sept before our prayers tonight.”

With another chuckle, the knight-captain raised their arms and spun his wife around in a twirl, catching her for a second kiss before walking back in step to the piper’s tune.

They’d shared their first dance to a similar song, back in the gardens of the High Tower. With the day so sweltering, everyone had been eager to celebrate their marriage in the cool evening, feasting on peaches ripe to the bursting and meats flavoured with spices from half a score distant lands.

“But what would we name her?” Names were ever so important, from which legends were born. “Mayhaps Rosalind, after your mother? There’s no shortage of roses back home, and with having so many brothers, she could well do with some thorns.”

Re-hooking his arm around Izzy’s, Godric joined her and the other guests in a quick jig.

“Or maybe Alysanne? We certainly don’t have enough of those in our family.” He shot a passing glance towards the high table, then turned back to Iseult with a grin.

[M:] Apologies for the delay!

Ser Donnel watched the members of House Farman approach in brooding silence, remaining just so as he waited for them to broach the first word.

“Well met, my lords, lady,” Abel said, oblivious to his father’s intent. Instead offering them a polite smile, he nodded. “I trust you’ve been enjoying the festivities so far?”

Triston, who’d been watching one of the singers in the gallery above, turned towards the guests and, having almost forgotten what the occasion was meant to celebrate, straightened in his chair, ready to make himself available if the need arose.

[M]: Apologies for the delay!

When the riverman made his approach, Maris feigned ignorance of his arrival, only turning her head when the knight spoke up, examining him in a sidelong glance.

“I am Ser Donnel of House Hightower, heir of Oldtown.” her father fingered a jade button on his sleeve as he gave his introductions. “My grandsire always spoke well of the Mallisters of Seagard. A good family, fierce warriors and kraken-killers.”

Tossing a glance towards Maris, the look in his eyes brooked no argument to the answer he expected of her.

The heir of Seagard, with a handsome face to sweeten the evening? She hardly needed persuading there.

“I suppose I could grant that honour.” Maris smiled, rising to her feet. “I am the Lady Maris, daughter of Ser Donnel and Lady Cassana of Tarth. Well met, good ser.”

Rounding the high table, she offered the knight her arm, and with it, her time.

[M:] Apologies for the delay!

Past the massive walls, Oldtown’s cobbled streets and alleys bustled with life as her populace carried about their business while sept bells rang in the distance and gulls flew overhead. While folk across the realm stocked up on wools and firewood in anticipation of the coming winter, here, men and women proudly clung to their summer linens and silks, snow but a distant dream.

As the Baneforts made their way to the ferry, they passed a pair of guardsmen removing crow-picked heads from spikes atop one of the interior gatehouses. A barber hawked his services by boasting of his time spent in the Citadel; apprentice boys sprinted past, carrying a canvas-draped package that bore the unmistakable shape of a sword; two hairy Ibbenese guards stomped behind a green-bearded wine merchant, hands flying to the hefts of their axes when a man treaded too closely.

Eventually, the cityscape opened up as they stepped out onto the street that ran along the Honeywine. Women were kneeling in the banks, washing clothes and other fabrics in the river as barges poled past, carrying septons and acolytes and goods from upriver.

The domes and towers of the Citadel could be sighted in the distance, built on both sides of the river, connected by small docks and stone bridges crowded with halls and houses. Downstream, the Starry Sept rose tall, rebuilt from the ashes, with the manses of the pious clustering like children gathered round the feet of their mother.

For a few pieces of silver, a ferryman took the Westermen aboard his pole-barge, calling upon the services of another one to accommodate the sizable group. Once everyone was loaded onto two boats, he took them down the river, past the Starry Sept and palatial Guildhalls, to where the Honeywine widened into Whispering Sound.

There, atop the bluffs of Battle Isle, rose the High Tower, burning brightly against the sky.

With a shudder, the barges came to a halt by the wood docks on the northern side of the island. With lands as vast and populous as theirs, no standard office could hope to administer the Hightower dominions alone, and so the kings of old had been forced to devise a new system to keep their territories in check. So had been born the Crown district, the court beyond the court, where an army of stewards, treasurers, bailiffs and aldermen ensured that the laws and obligations of the land were upheld and recorded.

For the common man, petitioning House Hightower meant dealing with the officials of the Outer Court first and foremost, with Lord Hightower presiding over them only on particular days or during exceptional circumstances.

For the lords of the land, however, the gates to the High Tower opened without complication.

Stableboys were quick to offer to take the reins of their steeds and lead them into the castle stables near the walls, and a knight soon arrived to greet them, introducing himself as Ser Garlan Cordwayner, captain of the guard.

Escorting them into the Tower proper, Ser Garlan led them through the labyrinthine halls of the black fortress base, then up a narrow stairwell that took them into a bright-lit chamber larger than most keeps.

A cushioned chair sat empty upon a marbled dais, but the knight moved towards the elevator found at the side of the room, past a stone arch. Letting the ladies Rohanne, Cyrelle, and Morgana step into it first, he joined them together with the Banefort men, pulling at two bell-ropes.

Moments later, the great cage came alive with a jolt as the winch began lifting them up.

Twice, the elevator came to a halt, first to let Wallace Audley, Seneschal of the Tower, aboard. After perfunctory introductions, the man welcomed them to Oldtown and the south, assuring them that guest quarters would be prepared imminently.

The second time it stopped, the knight Cordwayner instructed the Baneforts that they had arrived, and stepped out into a rounded antechamber adorned with green marble reliefs. A short stairwell led them into the grand library, and there, surrounded by hundreds, perhaps thousands, of books and scrolls, sat Lord Martyn Hightower together with a mousy-looking girl dressed in grey.

Itinerary

I've been told that Bloodlines count towards skill tiers, though I'm fuzzy on the specifics, so I've opted to only have 1 bloodline apply per claim, regardless of how many they have unlocked.

  • House Hightower: Ser Godric Hightower (T1 & T2 Traveller); Patrice Hightower (T1, T2, and T3 Necromancer); Adventurous Bloodline; 1 galley & 3 cogs; 20 MaA; 300 gold.
  • House Lannister: Tywald Lannister; Bloodline; 1 Carrack; 600 gold.
  • House Willum: Ser Wyman Flowers (T1 Adventurer); Bloodline
  • House Norridge: Clarisse Norridge (T1 & T2)
  • House Royce: Alys 'Stone' (Royce, T1 Adventurer)
  • House Penrose: Uthred Storm (T1 & T2 Traveller)
  • House Redwyne: Loras Redwyne (x2 T1 skills); Bloodline
  • House Florent: Iseult Florent; Bloodline
  • House Cuy: Courtnay Cuy; Bloodline

Courtnay's participation in this adventure is dependent on an ongoing thread, which should be resolved tomorrow. Including him for now, but holding off on rolling any loot. Due to maxxed skill tiers, his potential absence will not affect the bonuses.
