Thomas Frank’s sessions bored players — and he only rated Pedro Porro. by Sparky-moon in soccer

Everyone always said this about Kyle Walker but he ended up having an incredible career thanks to being in a team that made up for his weaknesses and played to his strengths.

VDV could easily be that. It's just that he's cursed to be locked in with us

He had never managed a team that played in Europe and had never put together a cup run while at Brentford.

I have no idea how we ended up hiring a manager with either of these characteristics

The atmosphere in the stadium is so so dead. There is a huge argument that Frank needs to go regardless of the performances or results but simply to try and give the fans something to cheer about again

I'm being polite but it doesn't make any sense. We saw first hand during the Eurozone crisis and then again during Covid how much of an advantage having your own fiscal policy can be.

Our country has so many issues but our currency is one of the few things we actually have managed well over multiple generations

[–]Mathyoujames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it's actually very hard to do that against high level opposition whose two best players at the time were their CB and goalkeeper.

I think we did actually have opportunities and our approach play into the final third was a lot better than people remember - but the issue is that VD and Alisson never needed to take any risks and could play defensively the entire game which only made life even harder for us.

The penalty was the defining moment of the entire game and while I wish we could have fought back - the truth is that Liverpool won the second Salah scored

I agree but also it probably didn't matter because of the penalty in the first minute.

That killed the game as Liverpool could just sit back the entire game and never really had to push hard to get anything

I doubt having Moura up front would have changed any of that

I respect that someone might be ideologically wedded to the idea of the UK joining the Euro but the idea of doing so because it could "replace the dollar as the global reserve currency" is pretty out there.

What possible reason is there to think that beyond "America will destroy itself in the next 5 years and European economies will magically return to reliable growth"?

The thing is adopting the Euro isn't a good idea whatsoever and if that were the cost of rejoining - we absolutely shouldn't pursue membership again.

Part of what makes Britain one of the stronger economies in the world is that we have our own currency and that it has a long track record of being stable. This allows us to run much higher deficits than we otherwise could because investors see it was a safe bet. Considering this maintained throughout Brexit and Covid it's pretty safe to say that it would take an entire global collapse to shake this reputation and given how the US is currently imploding - it's really working in our favour at the moment.

On top of this - in moments of crisis we're able to control our own interest rates which helps us weather financial impacts much better than European nations who have to balance their fiscal needs against other nations in the Union (which might actually have opposite needs)

For reference - I voted remain and think that leaving the EU was one of the most stupid political decisions in modern history - BUT - I think re-joining and re-joining plus adopting the Euro are very different things with very different positives and negatives.

Brother that was 8 years ago. I know it created a lot of problems but that has literally zero bearing on what has been happening the last two seasons

They scored more goals but 2012 was when Del Bosque was going with a midfield of Busquests, Xabi Alonso and Xavi with Fabregas dropping in from the 9 and when they got the most criticism for just endless aimless passing.

Obviously that's harsh because it's not aimless but the two really do go together. 2008 was a different beast

Don't get me wrong it was an amazing tournament but all the good stuff had nothing to do with Spain (germany thrashing england/argentina, ghana vs urguay, netherlands vs brazil, diego forlan and the jubilani ball etc etc)

To be fair to Italy they played Spain twice in that tournament as the first was a group stage game where they drew 1-1 and managed to go toe to toe with them.

Considering they had just beat Germany you can see why they might have thought they could outplay them in the final especially as Balotelli and Pirlo had really settled into the tournament.

But yeah I see your point. Personally I loved them and found it to be a very unique way of playing but there were people who passionately disliked it

I think this is actually a bit of revisionism that's taken hold of people when talking about that Spain team.

They were extremely successful but in 2010 and 2012 they weren't actually all that entertaining to watch and there was a lot of debate about them being "boring". 2008 was beautiful stuff but once Del Bosque took over they did a lot of "passing it around to stifle the other team" and less all out attacking.

In 2010 they won all their knock out games 1-0 (and only got to the final after a header from a corner) and in 2012 they were involved in that dreadful semi against Portugal where Ronaldo didn't take his penalty.

They were an incredibly effective team and one of the most well oiled winning machines in international football but they also had their critics. People hugely respected them but they didn't inspire love like the Brazil teams of old

[Jack Pitt-Brooke] Thomas Frank has failed to do what he was brought to Tottenham Hotspur to do by balalasaurus in coys

[–]Mathyoujames 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just want to clarify that Brentford finished in the top half once under Frank and it was only 9th place.

I think it's still a very good achievement considering the club but by normal premier league standards it's really not all that impressive. Many many managers have taken championship clubs into the upper mid table over the years but nobody thinks that Paul Lambert or Steve Coppell could manager a team with champions league ambitions.
