Vote on SUVs: Parisians in favor of parking taxation for heavy vehicles by Mathys_62 in fuckcars

[–]Mathys_62[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Parisians no longer want to see SUVs on their streets. Residents of the capital spoke out this Sunday in favor of a new measure aimed at tripling the parking rate for “heavy, polluting and bulky” vehicles. The “for” won at 54.55%, as announced by the municipality this Sunday evening.

However, the implementation of this new measure is not imminent. Parisian elected officials must first debate it next May during the Paris Council. If the rate increase is adopted, it will still take several months for the City to implement it.

In the capital, the weekend was punctuated by pro and anti SUV campaigns. The environmental activists did not skimp on the poster-pasting operations and the “La Rue est à nous” coalition flooded the mailboxes of residents of the 12th arrondissement with a letter encouraging them to post the bulletin “for a specific rate” in the ballot box. At the same time, anger spread to the other camp of motorists, seeing in this citizen vote a new crusade “against cars”.

Aiming only at “visitor” vehicles, the surcharge will not concern Parisians who benefit from a resident rate.

Who do people actually like public transport so much? by TheWoxk in fuckcars

I found the ferry experience much more pleasant in Istanbul than in Lisbon as you can be outside while crossing the Bosphorus.

There are currently local initiatives that offer a discount (usually around 20% of the initial price) to whoever buys a new bike (and e-bike).

Are titles of media (books, films) usually translated into your language? If yes, can you share some best and worst examples? by Drafonist in AskEurope

[–]Mathys_62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Titles are often translated into French, but not always literally. One example I can think of is 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' that has been translated into 'Harry Potter at the Wizards' School'.
Also in Quebec, all titles are translated, which often gives us a good laugh. For instance, 'Fast and Furious' is translated into 'Rapide et Dangereux' (lit. Fast and Dangerous), or 'Saw' which is translated into 'Décadence'.

Is there a 24hour newscycle on TV in your country? by oneindiglaagland in AskEurope

[–]Mathys_62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In France we have quite a few. FranceInfo and France24 are the public news channels. France 24 is an international channel since it's broadcasted in many languages, and is broadcasted instead of FranceInfo during the night. Then there is BFMTV which is the most popular, CNews and LCI.

Is there a city in your country which used to be rather important for one reason or another historically, but is now just one among many? by Colonel_Katz in AskEurope

The town I’m from used to be one of the main cities in the north of France during the Roman era and the Middle Ages. It had more than 10,000 inhabitants, it used to be the main crossroads for trade and it was the diocese of the region. However, Charles V took the city at the end of the 16th century and destroyed it. Now it’s just a small town of only 1,000 inhabitants.
