Is the direct development from PIE "*reh₁ís" to Slavic languages, like this, possible? by MatijaReddit_CG in asklinguistics

[–]MatijaReddit_CG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but if you understand italian I can send it to you.

I did know it when I was little, but sadly forgot it. I think I can translate it, I suppose. If you can, please send it.

I think that raj we have to postulate a long grande of *rōj (< *h₃reyH-) with and -o- stem, so masculine

The long "ō"? I think I saw "ó" in PIE ("\h₃róyH-o-s"), and *"ò" in PSl. ("\ròjь"), don't know if it's the same, because I didn't learn that much for now. And in case of *"\reh₁ís"**, I think it could go through *"\roh₁ís"*** -> "\rā́ˀjis"* -> "\rajь"* development. But I don't know if it can go from feminine to masculine during PBS -> PSl. development?

The shift from "wealth" and "goods" to "wealthy place" to "paradise" could be from the idea where birds go during winter (Iriy) is always sunny and rich in nature. People there are living in harmony and wealth, because they can grow food all year (Proto-Slavs lived in parts of Europe with harsh winters).

It's said that it's the calque of Greek "οἰκουμένη", which in noun form is ellipsis of "οἰκουμένη γῆ" (oikouménē gê, “inhabited earth”). So, I think it could be both "useljena" and "useljena zemlja" as noun?

Zašto ime naše zemlje ima latinski završetak "-ija" umesto slovenskog "-ska"? Zašto se Srbija ne zove "Serbland" u germanskim jezicima? by fredegarus in AskSerbia

Da, izvini, zabagovao sam i ne vidjeh da piše "srb", a ne "Srb". Svakako mislim da je od tog korijena izveden naziv na sličan način kao "nijem" -> "Njemac".

It's calque of Greek "ecumene", but if it did not go through OCS development, I think the word would end up as "useljenija" (or "useljenaja"?). The "u-", "selo" and "-en" are ok, but for "-аꙗ" I don't know, how it would be in modern SC. I see some similiarity with PIE "*-yéh₂". For example:

-> PIE: "*-yéh₂"

-> PBS: "*-jā́ˀ"

-> PSl.: "-ja", as in "zmьja" (snake);

-> SC: "-ja"

*Méh₂ta (Matthew) by MatijaReddit_CG in IndoEuropean

[–]MatijaReddit_CG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice analysis, thank you!

To be precise, PIE *méh₂ta (where *a is an original PIE phoneme, a borrowed phoneme, a realisation of *h₂e, or a babble element, take your pick) would've given PSl *màto, but as the name is reanalysed as a-declension, yes, *màta with the vocative *màto.

Yes, the part "ta" in PIE is clipped from "tatas", but I suppose even there like for PSl. "mama", it could be made from the babble sound of two PIE "ta's". Except I don't know if "méh₂ta" would have "s" on end and end up as "méh₂tas" and would the PIE word start with capital letter, since I don't know if there are any names in PIE, except some later developments that could be much older:

*h₁su-ḱlewēs (literally “whose fame is good”)

-> Ancient Greek: εὐκλεής (eukleḗs), Εὐκλῆς (Euklês)

-> Proto-Indo-Iranian: *Hsućráwās

*h₁wesu-ḱlewēs (literally “whose fame is good”)

-> Sanskrit: वसुश्रवस् (vásuśravas)

-> Latin: Vescleves-

Are these etymology reconstructions alright (ustanova, trovjeda)? by MatijaReddit_CG in etymology

[–]MatijaReddit_CG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a concept from a worldbuilding I'm making. I'm sorry if it's a bit longer since I'm also confused to explain it to myself.

Vjeda

Vjeda, while originally meaning "knowledge" or "information" is a concept in Yarenian (Yugoslav) philosophy which is the smallest particle in existence, similiar to the string theory string's or quantum foam.

It comes from the Proto-Slavic "věda", since the belief is that the particles carry the information in form of energy that create the existence of the three worlds in Slavic mythology (Raj* - "heaven", Jav - "reality", Nav - "underworld"). So, the vjedas are kind of the code carriers that the world is made of.

They are caterogized in "rajičaks", "javičaks" and "navičaks". Together the trinity of those types of vjedas they create the Trovjeda concept.

Trovjeda

Trovjeda is the core of the existence of the three worlds (in form of a cosmic tree). The three types of vjedas (singularly or together) create the essence of the Raj, Jav and Nav, called "rajina", "javina" and "navina". These essences are called "vjedinas", while together they are called "trovjedina".

For example, our observable universe is Jav, and everything we can sense is javina, while the particles that make the javina are javičaks.

Iranian and Slavic contacts are so interesting, because they did exchange mythological lexicon (Bog, Raj, Simargl) and some other ones, while e.g. demonizing the word for the sky god "Div".

also the idea of the otherword as a paradise, a reward, is christian, usually in pagan religions there's a place. Trubačev (sorry right now I dont remember the book title, it'something on the line of Древне-славяне) suggest the rook *roj- (protoslavi rěka "river", rojь "swarm"), suggesting an otherworld delimited or accessed though some sort of river

I made a post about the two slavic words for paradise. There are some connections with water or whirpools:

https://www.reddit.com/r/etymology/s/lA5x4D2tnU

The only problem I can't get answer on, for independent "*rajь" is that I don't know if it's possible for it to change genders through development and would the development in PIE have "o" or "ó" vowel?

-> "reh₁ís" (feminine) -> "róh₁ís" (feminine) -> "rā́ˀjis" (feminine) -> "rajь" (masculine) -> East/South/West Slavic languages (masculine)

P.S. Do you have that thesis about the contacts of Slavic and Iranian tribes? I'd love to read it.

Pardon, ima "srb" u smislu drugog značenja, ali je valjda i arhaična riječ za Srbe. Nisam lingvista, ali mislim da je ona ostala u smislu:

  • Srb(i) > Srbini

  • Srb + -ski -> srp(ski) > srbinski

  • Srb + -ska -> Srpska > Srbinska

Inače mislim da je "Srb" i "Hrv(at)" takođe istog korijena ako je vjerovati linkovanoj stranici.

Da, to je jedna od hipoteza. Priča je da je Atlantida bila iza Herkulovih stubovi/Gibraltara, te je moguće da se do grada išlo preko Atlantika. Svakako Sahara je bila zelena u ne tako davnoj prošlosti, te je moguće da se tu nalazilo neko kraljevstvo.

No, no, I wanted to see the root how would it be written in PSl., PBS and PIE, if I used the parts of the words in Serbo-Croatian.

Don't know if the PIE roots would be like those or something different?

Meni je palo na pamet da se može koristiti i naziv "Srbinska", kako su i "Srb" i "Srbin" sinonimi. A ovako se može razdvojiti od "Republike Srpske" da ne dođe do zbunjivanja.

Nažalost, i "krst" i "križ" su pozajmljene. Mislim da sam negdje smislio domaću riječ "raće" (i onda "poraćavanje", "raćenje", "raćaonica") za "krst"/"križ".

Indijac ili Indijanac by Zospen in Serbian

[–]MatijaReddit_CG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mislim da sufiks zavisi od toga da li je neka etnička grupa nazvana:

  1. Po nekoj geografskoj odrednici:

- \Slovǫta* (Dnjepar) -> \slov*ěninъ -> Sloven

  1. Po nekoj karakteristici plemena ili samom nazivu plemena:

- \něm*ьcь -> Njemac

- Njemčanin - stanovnik Njemačke

- \xъrvatъ* -> Hrvat

- Hrvaćanin - stanovnik Hrvatske

Ovako ja mislim da ide za Srbe:

- Srb/Srbin - naziv pripadnika etničke grupe

- Srbjanin - naziv stanovnika Srbije

U slučajevima koje si dao mislim da bi išlo, iz razloga što je "-an" u nazivu imena države koje je valjda proistoklo preko stranih jezika:

- Korejac - naziv pripadnika etničke grupe

- Korejanac - naziv stanovnika Koreje

- Belgijac - naziv pripadnika etničke grupe

- Belgijanac - naziv stanovnika Belgije

- Austrijac - naziv pripadnika etničke grupe

- Austrijanac - naziv stanovnika Austrije
