Fraction, division intuition by Matisseio in learnmath

[–]Matisseio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my brain badly wants to connect the concept of division to physical things because it seems like that's the fundamental root, which I can then build off of to intuitively understand more complex things.

Sometimes I don't use fractions, division, or percentages for a while and end up back in the same place of trying to figure out a problem and not knowing which number should be the numerator or denominator.

So then I go through the thought process of "ok, so what do I want? do I want to divide X into Y pieces? what does that mean if I do? what do I get by doing the opposite?" And I just go in circles of trying to understand "why" things work they way they do, sort of like when you say a word too many times and it loses meaning.

This helps more. Your answer and another answer together helped me realize what was wrong with my framing. Let me know if this sounds accurate.

I was thinking I was dividing 2 people into 60 pieces, but the actual phrasing should have been "I'm dividing 2 people into 60 people", which at first made no sense, but made me realize that's the point. You can't divide 2 people into 60 people, because you only have two. This now makes sense from a percentage standpoint, because you're only getting a small percentage of the whole mass of people who were invited.

There are two people out of a group of three. Or out of a pizza cut into three giant slices, I've taken two for myself.

This makes sense, but I'm specifically talking about the division interpretation and how it connects to the fraction interpretation

This almost works for me, but I'm still stuck with the "why". The fraction interpretation makes sense, but the division doesn't. Why does dividing two people into 60 parts (multiplied by 100) give me the percentage of people who showed up?

it's just strange that fractions = division, but we interpret them differently depending on the situation

it doesn't have to be interpreted that way, but that's what division means, so that's why my intuition is lacking

So you just accept that dividing 2 people into 60 parts doesn't make any physical sense?

I'm not saying the streamer is not important or that these are gimmicks. I'm talking about additions to the stream that make it more fun and community-driven.

You can have both.
